Tsukihitei is a ryokan known for its cuisine, with 5 rooms that are all detached buildings, set deep in Nara Park and cradled by the World Heritage-listed Kasugayama Primeval Forest. Built in the 36th year of the Meiji era as a reception house for honored guests, the historic building echoes with birdsong and the murmur of the stream, and guests can enjoy seasonal kaiseki course cuisine and 2 private-hire family baths. Whether children can be accommodated, and the conditions for co-sleeping and meals, differ by plan, and children who have not yet started elementary school are served a kids' meal. It is about 10 to 15 minutes by taxi from Kintetsu Nara Station and JR Nara Station.
Rooms
There are 5 rooms in all, each a private detached building. Yanagi is a Japanese-style tatami room of 8 tatami mats for 1-2 guests, and Hagi is a Japanese-style tatami room of 10 tatami mats for 1-4 guests. For both, meals are served in a private dining room separate from the guest room, and child rates are set for these two rooms. Wakaba, renovated in December 2024, is a 66 sq m Japanese-Western room for 1-2 guests with two beds measuring 120 cm wide by 200 cm long. Take is a 74 sq m Japanese-Western room (10 tatami mats plus twin beds) for 1-4 guests, and Sakura, the largest room here at 90 sq m (8 tatami mats plus twin beds), also sleeps 1-4 guests. Sakura, Wakaba and Take have in-room dining and a bath made of Koya-maki (Japanese umbrella pine) in the room, but no child rate is listed for them, and the chef's-choice "Tokujo Kaiseki" premium plan, which includes the Wakaba room, cannot accept co-sleeping children, elementary school children or infants.
Dining
Meals center on kaiseki course cuisine. Dinner is a menu built around seasonal ingredients, while breakfast is a set Japanese meal, with the Nara specialty chagayu (rice porridge simmered in tea) available on request. On standard plans, dinner is served from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and breakfast from 7:30 to 9 a.m.; on higher-grade plans, dinner is served until 9 p.m., with last orders at 7 p.m. Allergies and disliked ingredients can be communicated in advance. Children under school age are served their own kids' meal.
Baths
There are 2 private-hire baths, Okuyama and Wakakusa, and there is no charge to use them. Each is a private-hire family bath that requires a reservation, giving families time to themselves without worrying about other guests. Okuyama uses natural wood for the ceiling, walls, floor and tub alike, with Koya-maki (Japanese umbrella pine) for the tub itself. Wakakusa is distinguished by leaf-motif tiled walls and a floor of Yoshino cypress finished with adze work. The baths are not onsen, and there is no communal bath.
