Kaze no Naramachi is a small 8-room hotel in Nara's Naramachi district, created from the former residence of a sake brewing family. As a SAKE HOTEL built around the theme of Japanese sake, it serves local sake from Toyosawa Shuzo alongside French cuisine made with local ingredients and a Japanese breakfast. Co-sleeping is available up to age 6, but the rooms with box stairs do not accept children of elementary school age and younger, and some rooms are for adults only, so families with children need to choose their room with care.
Rooms
The former residence of a sake brewing family has been converted into 8 guest rooms, each with its own character, including rooms made from a storehouse, a detached annex and a tea room. Some are generously sized, such as the VMG Premier with a hinoki-cypress bath, which is 54 sq m for up to 3 guests with 2 beds and one set of futon bedding. Others measure 37-46 sq m, and some of those are maisonette style. Child rates are set for these room types. The 43-52 sq m rooms for up to 3 guests are for adults only. One 41 sq m room is a maisonette in which box stairs (hakokaidan, a traditional step-chest staircase) lead up to a second-floor bedroom; because the incline is steep, children of elementary school age and younger cannot stay there for safety reasons. Please also understand in advance that, as a historic building, the property is not highly insulated or airtight.
Dining
Breakfast is served in the restaurant from 7:30 a.m., with last orders at 9 a.m. and closing at 10 a.m. It is a Japanese breakfast that makes the most of local ingredients, including yuan-yaki grilled fish prepared with sake from Toyosawa Shuzo and a soup made with sake lees. Plans that include dinner offer a French course built on the region's rich local produce, such as Yamato vegetables and Yamato beef. Elementary school children are served a half course, while children who have not yet started elementary school (booked with meals and bedding) and co-sleeping children (meals only) are served a one-plate meal. Meals accommodating allergies can also be arranged.
Baths
There is no onsen, communal bath or private-hire bath, so guests bathe in the bathroom in their own room. Some rooms have a hinoki-cypress bath, while others have a prefabricated modular bathroom. Sake lees from Toyosawa Shuzo are also provided at the bath, so you can enjoy a sake-lees soak.
Family-friendly features
Children are welcome to stay. Co-sleeping is available for up to 2 children, up to age 6, and comes with a bath towel and face towel. However, the maisonette rooms with box stairs have a steep incline, so children of elementary school age and younger cannot stay in them. The 43-52 sq m rooms are for adults only, so please take care when choosing a room. There are no barrier-free facilities, but guest rooms have Western-style toilets. There is no babysitting service and no indoor or outdoor pool.
