Overview
Sansuien is a long-established ryokan founded in 1949, a 7-minute walk from Kochi Castle. Yudono Suisaikaku, the only natural onsen in central Kochi City, has an open-air bath and a sauna suitable for three generations bathing together. The ryokan welcomes children from babies through elementary school age, and family-friendly room types include 12-tatami and 14-tatami Japanese-style tatami rooms. Dinner differs for older elementary school children and for younger elementary school children and children under school age, and there are also plans that come with childcare-support extras for families traveling with infants.
Rooms
The 12-tatami Japanese-style tatami rooms (2-6 guests) and the 14-tatami special Japanese-style tatami rooms (2-6 guests) are spacious enough for families. The 10-tatami Japanese-style tatami rooms in the new wing are non-smoking and take 2-5 guests. The 22 sq m Western-style twin rooms (1-2 guests) include some rooms that combine a 120 x 200 bed with a 100 x 200 bed, so guests are advised to confirm in advance. The 20 sq m Japanese-modern twin rooms are also non-smoking and designed for 1-2 guests. The barrier-free room is completely step-free and designed so that guests in wheelchairs can get around comfortably. Every room has a refrigerator and a toilet with a washlet seat, among other features.
Dining
Dinner is served in a non-smoking dining area where all seating is at tables with low-legged Japanese chairs, with partitions between the seats. Some facility information describes the dinner venue as a private room, and because the wording varies between sources, we recommend confirming before you book. Depending on the plan, dinner for older elementary school children follows the adult menu, while dinner for younger elementary school children and children under school age (booked with meals and futon bedding) is a single-plate kids' meal. Both Western and Japanese kids' menus are available. Breakfast is served from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. (last entry 9 a.m.) in the banquet hall as a Japanese-Western buffet, and sandwiches can be prepared for guests departing before 7 a.m. if you let the ryokan know by the day before. Food allergies are accommodated only to the extent of leaving out specific ingredients during cooking; complete removal is not possible. Because a child's condition can change suddenly, the ryokan may decline to serve meals to children at all, including allergy-adjusted meals; in that case, guests are directed to book a room-only stay or bring their own food.
Baths and Onsen
Yudono Suisaikaku is the only good-quality natural onsen below Kochi Castle. The spring water is a high-temperature sodium chloride spring, recirculated and heated. It has an open-air bath, a communal bath and a sauna. Bathing hours for staying guests are 3 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. (last entry 11 p.m.) and 6 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. the next morning (last entry 9 a.m.). The bathtubs in guest rooms are not onsen, and there is no private-hire bath and no swapping of the men's and women's baths. Day-use bathing is also accepted from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (last reception 3:30 p.m.), at 1,200 yen for adults, 600 yen for children of elementary school age and 400 yen for children under school age (age 3 and over).
Family-Friendly Features
The ryokan welcomes children from babies through elementary school age. The number of children who can co-sleep and the rates for them vary by plan, with settings such as up to 2 children or up to 6 children. Children ages 0 to 6 are charged 2,200 yen per night as a facility fee and breakfast charge, with additional charges if dinner or futon bedding is needed. Items available to borrow free of charge, in limited numbers, include a portable bassinet, a humidifier and an air purifier; advance notice is required. On the plan for families with infants ages 0 to 3, childcare-support items such as educational toys, a play mat and a baby-bottle sterilizer and dryer can be used during the stay, offered as an extra exclusive to that plan. The passage leading to the onsen building has a bouldering space for children, and toys for children to play with are available in the building. There is also a dreamlike photo spot themed on illuminated paper cutouts, which families can use for commemorative photos. Children's yukata are also lent out in a range of sizes. The building is barrier-free, with wheelchair-accessible toilets on the 1st floor and on the 2nd floor of Yudono Suisaikaku, though there is a small step at the entrance to the Japanese-style tatami rooms. No general medicines are kept on hand, and pets are not allowed. Guide dogs and service dogs may accompany guests with advance notice.
Access
The location is convenient as a sightseeing base: Kochi Castle is a 7-minute walk away, the Kochi Castle Museum of History is 8 minutes on foot, and Hirome Market is 10 minutes on foot. It is 15 minutes by car from the Kochi Interchange on the Kochi Expressway and about 10 minutes by taxi from JR Kochi Station. The outdoor parking area has 60 spaces and can be used 24 hours a day, at 1,000 yen per night for cars and 500 yen per night for motorcycles.
