forumWhat families say

Rakuten Travel rating 3.86 out of 5 (109 reviews). A family who stayed with a 2-year-old reports that the staff helped them with all sorts of things and that they felt nothing but gratitude. Another guest reports that their upper-grade elementary school child was served the same menu as the adults, which suggests care taken according to a child's age. Some guests do note, however, that the stairs up to the tatami living space on the upper level are steep, so children and older guests need to take care.

Overview

Hotel Beacon Onomichi is an in-station hotel connected directly to the second floor of JR Onomichi Station. An elevator and stairs lead up from in front of the south ticket gates, and the hotel has 16 rooms across six themed room types. Children are welcome, and infants who use neither meals nor bedding co-sleep free of charge. The Bunk Bed Room sleeps up to 4 and comes with bunk beds and a kitchen, making it well suited to families. There is no communal bath; the private-hire baths are available for a fee. The hotel has no parking of its own.

Rooms

The hotel has 16 rooms in total, across six themed room types. The most standard is the 13 sq m Standard Double, which has one Simmons double bed (140 cm wide by 200 cm long) and can be booked from one guest. The 18 sq m Superior Queen has one queen bed (160 cm wide by 200 cm long) and sleeps 2 to 3 guests. The room best suited to families is the 17 sq m Bunk Bed Room. It sleeps up to 4 and has a bunk-style sleeping area as well as a private kitchen equipped with a frying pan, an induction cooktop and other essentials. The upper level has two sets of futon bedding (100 cm by 195 cm) and the lower level one Simmons double bed (160 cm by 200 cm); when two guests stay, they use the futon bedding on the upper level and the lower bed serves as a day bed. Other options include the 37 sq m Beacon Suite, which sleeps up to 3 (three single beds, with a 120-inch home theater), and the Cycle Twin and Corner Cycle Twin (23 sq m, up to 2 guests), where you can store your bicycle in the room. On September 19, 2026, five rooms in two new types will open: the Comfort Japanese Twin (18 sq m), a Japanese-modern room with tatami flooring, and the Comfort Cycle Twin (21 sq m), designed with care around steps and fitted with a bathroom that has a bathtub.

Dining

The in-house cafe, restaurant and bar Gen serves breakfast from 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. (last orders 9:30 a.m.). On plans that include breakfast, it is served as a Morning Box, with dishes made from local ingredients packed into a box. For allergies, the kitchen accommodates requests to the extent possible, limited to the 28 designated ingredients plus blue-backed fish, shellfish and crustaceans, when you contact the hotel by the day before your stay. Same-day requests and ingredient changes based on personal preferences cannot be accommodated. There is no room service.

Baths

There is no communal bath. Instead, two types of private bath (private-hire bath) are available for a fee: a Japanese cypress bath and a Towada stone bath. They are available by reservation only, and staying guests can book them from noon to 11 p.m. and from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. the next morning, at 2,500 yen per hour. They are not onsen. With no communal bath, bathing together as a family means reserving one of the private-hire baths.

Family-Friendly Points

Co-sleeping is limited to one child, and elementary school children pay 100% of the adult rate, in both the lower and upper grades. Every room has a refrigerator, which can also be used to store baby food and formula.
