Overview
Nissho Besso is a Japanese-style ryokan on Sanjo-dori at Tominokoji in Kyoto. Its main building, whose frame was raised in the Edo period, and the five-story reinforced-concrete Tachibana-kan both have Japanese-style tatami rooms laid with genuine tatami, for 1 to 5 guests. Dinner is in-room dining, and breakfast is served in a banquet hall overlooking the courtyard. In the main building and Tachibana-kan, children receive slippers, yukata and a souvenir, and the private-hire family bath (Okame no Yu) must be reserved in advance by phone. Co-sleeping and children's rates are not listed in our information, so please confirm with the ryokan before booking.
Rooms
The main building is a two-story wooden structure whose frame was raised in 1788 (the 8th year of the Tenmei era), and no two of its rooms share the same layout. The guest rooms are Japanese-style tatami rooms laid with genuine tatami. Two of them have no bathroom of their own and are priced lower accordingly. Tachibana-kan is a five-story reinforced-concrete building with 15 genuine tatami rooms in three types: 8, 10 and 12.5 tatami mats. All of them have a bath and toilet. Rooms in both the main building and Tachibana-kan take 1 to 5 guests, and the room layout you are given depends on the number of guests. Shoyutei, a detached annex to the main building, is a 100-year-old tea house whose three rooms of 4.5, 3 and 2 tatami mats have been turned into guest quarters, with a bath and toilet. Rantei (a whole-house machiya rental) and Ukon Tachibana operate under the same name, but they are separate buildings with no meals, and they are booked separately through Airbnb. Please treat them apart from the facilities and meals of the ryokan described here (the main building and Tachibana-kan).
Dining
Dinner is in-room dining, and breakfast is served in a banquet hall looking out over the courtyard. Under the ryokan's terms of accommodation, breakfast service begins between 7 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., and dinner service between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. (times may change temporarily). The main building basically offers a one-night, two-meal plan. Food allergy accommodation is listed among the arrangements for school trip groups, but allergy accommodation, a children's menu and children's chairs for regular stays are not listed in our information, so please confirm with the ryokan before booking if you need them.
Baths
There are communal baths (men's and women's) in the basements of both the main building and Tachibana-kan. Both are open from 4 p.m. to midnight and stock conditioner, shampoo and body soap. The main building also has a private-hire family bath, Okame no Yu, which must be reserved fully in advance by phone. Sessions start at 4 p.m., 5:30 p.m., 7 p.m., 8:30 p.m. and 10 p.m., each lasting 45 minutes per group, at 1,500 yen per person (tax included). It is for 2 to 5 guests, and a single guest is charged the rate for 2. Okame no Yu has one Komyoseki Onsen tub and two Shigaraki ware ceramic tubs, and since autumn 2021 it has been fitted with Mirabath and Mirable shower head microbubble generators. The bathroom also has health stepping stones that stimulate the soles of your feet. Whether children who are not yet out of diapers can get into the tubs of the communal baths or Okame no Yu, and whether the changing rooms have baby items, is not listed in our information, so please confirm with the ryokan before booking.
