Overview
Founded in the Muromachi period, Ikaho Onsen Kishigon Ryokan is a long-established ryokan next to the stone stairway street of Ikaho Onsen. Its rare Kogane no Yu spring water flows directly from the source into both the communal baths and the private-hire baths. Guest rooms are mainly Japanese-style tatami rooms and hold up to 7 guests, and children are welcome from age 0. Family-friendly touches include kids' meals for children who have not yet started elementary school, private-hire baths, and baby beds in the communal baths. Some rooms and meal plans cannot be used by children of elementary school age and under.

Non-smoking
The 8-tatami Japanese-style room holds 1 to 4 guests. The 10-tatami Japanese-style rooms, facing either the Haruna side or the Akagi side, can be laid out with futon bedding for 5. The 12-tatami triple on the Haruna side can also be used by 4 guests, and one extra set of futon bedding is added when 4 stay. The room made up of two connected Japanese-style rooms of 15 and 6 tatami mats suits two-generation families and groups. Rooms that combine beds with a Japanese-style area have no steps apart from a single step at the entrance. Children's futons are not provided, and any extra futon is the same one used for adults. The Kishigon Suite and the larger Japanese-Western room with a private-hire bath (Momiji) are reached by 5 to 6 steps from the elevator hall, and children of elementary school age and under cannot use them.
Dining
Dinner is a kaiseki course built around Gunma's renowned beef, prepared to suit each season. Breakfast is a Japanese-Western buffet served from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., with last entry at 8:20 a.m. The dining venues include Kajika on the second floor, which has a banquet hall and semi-private rooms, and Haruna. Kajika's semi-private rooms include 3 rooms seating up to 8 guests and 4 seating areas for 4 guests. Children's meals differ by age: children of elementary school age and over but under 12 are served food comparable to the adult menu, while children under school age receive a kids' meal with sashimi and other dishes. Baby food is not available, but rice porridge made with white rice or warm udon can be ordered for a fee. Bumbo seats or children's chairs are available at the dining venues, though the number is limited. Single-ingredient allergies such as egg, crustaceans and fruit can be accommodated by leaving that ingredient out, but allergies to dashi stock cannot be accommodated. Yamazato Kaiseki, where steak is grilled in front of you, is available only to guests of junior high school age and above, so children from age 0 through elementary school age cannot use it.
Baths and Onsen
The onsen is Ikaho Kogane no Yu, flowing directly from the source with no recirculation and no added water. There are 3 communal baths: Gonzaemon no Yu, Rokuzaemon no Yu and Mataemon no Yu. The private-hire baths are Akagi and Ikaho, which newly opened in April 2026, at 2,750 yen for a 45-minute session, and Fuchina, at 4,400 yen for a 90-minute session; reservations are taken at the front desk after check-in on the day. Mataemon no Yu and Rokuzaemon no Yu have beds for children. Infants may bathe as well, but because onsen water is stronger than a home bath, guests are asked to avoid long soaks. Under Gunma Prefecture regulations, children age 7 and over are asked to refrain from bathing with the opposite sex; the private-hire baths fall outside that rule, so the whole family can use them together. The communal baths are not barrier-free, while the private-hire baths are. Renovation work on the communal baths is scheduled from September 1, 2026 to January 31, 2027, and during that period Mataemon no Yu will operate on an alternating schedule for men and women.
Family-friendly features
Co-sleeping is available for up to 2 children. Children's rates depend on age and on whether meals and bedding are included: children of elementary school age and over but under 12 pay 70% of the adult rate, and children under school age with meals and bedding pay 50% of the adult rate. For children under school age, bedding only is 3,300 yen and meals only is 4,400 yen, while children ages 1 to 5 who need neither meals nor bedding are 2,200 yen. Infants age 0 stay free. Strollers may be used inside the ryokan but not inside guest rooms, and the adjoining stone stairway street is made up of steps, so strollers are not well suited to it. There are no barrier-free guest rooms, but you can request a room near the elevator when booking. The Yamazato dining venue, the Kishigon Suite and the 15-tatami Japanese-style room with twin beds accept children age 12 and over, so children ages 0 to 11 cannot use them.
Access
The ryokan sits so close to the stone stairway street that it is only a few seconds' walk from the entrance. The dedicated parking lot is across the road from Ikaho Elementary School, with 150 free spaces and a shuttle from the parking lot to the ryokan. The nearest convenience store is about a 5-minute walk away.
