forumWhat families say

Rakuten Travel rating 4.53 out of 5 (772 reviews). One guest who stayed with three generations of family reports that both their parents in their 70s and their young child were very happy with the meals. Others mention that the marshmallows in the lobby delighted the children and that it was fun when Ezo sika deer came close. Guests praise the wide variety at the buffet, though some reviews note that, depending on the season, there were many stink bugs and moths.

Overview

Jozankei Tsuruga Resort Spa Mori no Uta is a forest-themed onsen hotel with 54 rooms in Jozankei Onsen. Rooms that suit a family stay include Japanese-Western rooms (42 sq m, 1 to 4 guests), Deluxe Japanese-Western Rooms (52 sq m, 2 to 4 guests) and separate cottages with an open-air bath (up to 5 guests), and there are barrier-free rooms as well. Meals are either at Mori Buffet or a shabu-shabu course in the semi-private rooms of Mori no Suana. On shabu-shabu course plans, children under school age are served a kids' meal. Children may enter the communal bath of the opposite sex up to age 6. Co-sleeping and cribs are not stated, so please confirm with the hotel before booking.

Rooms

There are 54 guest rooms, all non-smoking. The Japanese-Western Room is 42 sq m with a 4.5-tatami-mat Japanese-style area finished in Ryukyu-style tatami, and it sleeps 1 to 4 guests. Futon bedding is provided in these rooms depending on the number of guests, and the bathroom has a shower booth only. The Deluxe Japanese-Western Room is 52 sq m for 2 to 4 guests, with an 8-tatami-mat Japanese-style area in Ryukyu-style tatami. The Deluxe Twin is 42 sq m, and when 3 guests stay, one sleeps on a sofa bed. The Deluxe Twin Room with Ganbanyoku (a heated-stone sauna) is 63 sq m, and when 3 guests stay, one sleeps on an extra bed. The Western-style Twin is 21 sq m, with a shower booth only.

The Cottages with Open-Air Bath are 4 maisonette-style units in a separate building. The Living + Bedroom type is 65 sq m plus a 12 sq m open-air bath area and sleeps up to 3 (the third guest on an extra bed). The Twin Bedroom x 2 type (65 sq m plus a 12 sq m open-air bath area, 2 rooms) sleeps up to 5 (the fifth guest on an extra bed) and is designed for families and groups. The Barrier-Free Twin Room (26 sq m, 1 to 2 guests) and the barrier-free Deluxe Japanese-Western Room (52 sq m, 1 to 4 guests) have no steps inside the room and handrails in the bathroom and toilet. Every room has an air purifier with a humidifying function, and humidifiers are also available to borrow in limited numbers.

Dining

Breakfast is served at Mori Buffet on the 1st floor. Dinner, depending on your plan, is either at Mori Buffet or a shabu-shabu course in the semi-private rooms of Mori no Suana on the 2nd floor. On shabu-shabu course plans, children under school age are served a kids' meal, and elementary school children have the same meal as adults. On the buffet Standard Plan and the Early Booking Plan (buffet), only 1-year-olds can be booked without meals; for children aged 2 and over, a separate meal charge of 2,200 yen (tax included) applies even if you book without meals. The early booking discount applies to adults only, not to children of elementary school age and under. Meals are not served in guest rooms. The buffet labels the 8 major allergens, but all dishes are cooked in the same kitchen, so it is not a menu that fully accommodates allergies. If your child has a food allergy, you need to let the hotel know in advance; for the shabu-shabu course, the head chef will consult with you on how to accommodate it.

Baths and Onsen

The water is Jozankei Onsen water, and the spring water is a sodium chloride spring. There is a communal bath and an open-air bath (recirculated and filtered, with water added and heated), plus a sauna where you can enjoy löyly (ladling water onto the hot stones). The communal bath and open-air bath are open from 11:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. the next morning and from 5 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., and the sauna from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. and from 5 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Children may enter the communal bath and changing room of the opposite sex up to age 6; children aged 7 and over cannot use the communal bath with a parent of the opposite sex. Guests with tattoos or tattoo stickers are asked to refrain from using the communal bath, and this also applies to children's tattoo stickers. Whether children in diapers may get into the baths is not stated, so please check in advance. The only in-room onsen open-air baths are on the terraces of the 4 Cottages with Open-Air Bath, fed straight from the source and heated.

Family-Friendly Features

On shabu-shabu course plans, children are booked in two categories: children who have not yet started elementary school (kids' meal and futon bedding) and elementary school children (the same meal as adults, plus futon bedding). When one adult stays with one child, the child is charged the same rate as an adult; even if this is not shown when you book, it is settled at the hotel. The 150-yen bathing tax applies to adults only, while the accommodation tax (300 yen to 1,000 yen per person per night) applies to children too. Mori Lounge on the 1st floor is a place to take off your shoes and relax on a green carpet, with bookshelves that include picture books and a fireplace where you can toast marshmallows. Whether co-sleeping is allowed and what it costs, and whether cribs or baby futons are available, are not stated, so please ask before booking. The website has an English language menu, but whether staff can assist in English is not stated, so please check if you need it.
