forumWhat families say

Rakuten Travel rating 4.53 out of 5 (1,187 reviews). Families praise the private-hire baths, saying they could spend a comfortable, unhurried time in the bath. Guests also mention enjoying the renovated interior and the bath tour at Shikanoyu on family trips. On the other hand, one point raised is that a children's meal was cold, so the serving temperature is worth keeping in mind.

Overview

Jozankei Hanamomiji is the annex of Shikanoyu, a long-established ryokan in Jozankei Onsen that opened in 1897. Its 77 guest rooms are mainly Japanese-style tatami rooms starting from 45 sq m, including spacious rooms for families. Children are welcome to stay, with co-sleeping, separate rates for babies and toddlers depending on whether meals and bedding are included, and children's menus. Two communal baths and three private-hire baths let families enjoy the Jozankei onsen, and a free shuttle bus from Sapporo Station is also available.

Rooms

All 77 guest rooms come in several types, mainly Japanese-style tatami rooms.

Casual

The Casual Japanese-style tatami room is 45 sq m and accommodates 1 to 3 guests, with futon bedding.

Comfort

The Comfort Japanese-style tatami room is 60 sq m.

Deluxe

The Deluxe Japanese-style tatami room with an antechamber is 75 sq m. Both the Comfort and Deluxe rooms accommodate 1 to 6 guests and have children's rates. The Yamanami Twin on the special Kokonoe floor is 60 sq m with a bidet toilet and two double beds, with a sofa bed or extra bed for a third guest, and accommodates 1 to 4 guests. On the top guest-room floor, the special floor urara has an onsen bath fed directly from the source in every room plus its own lounge, and its Premier Suite is 105 sq m with four double beds, accommodating 1 to 6 guests. All guest rooms are non-smoking, and there is a smoking room on the first floor.

Dining

Breakfast is a buffet of 50 Japanese and Western dishes at the Momijido dining room, served from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Dinner centers on kaiseki (multi-course Japanese) cuisine, including the seasonal kaiseki course Shiori. Guests staying on the special urara floor have dinner at utage, a semi-private dining room, where the premium kaiseki course Hatsune is served. For children's menus, the elementary school rate comes with a menu comparable to the adults', while the preschool-age rate that includes meals comes with a one-plate kids' meal; if you would like a children's dish for an elementary school child, please contact the ryokan. If anyone has an allergy, you must notify the ryokan by 5 p.m. the day before. Requests made on the day of the stay cannot be accommodated, and severe allergies and disliked ingredients cannot be accommodated either.

Baths and Onsen

There are two communal baths: Fugetsu, a view bath on the top floor, and Momijiyu, an open-air bath set in the garden. Guests can also use the communal bath and full-scale sauna at the adjacent main building, Shikanoyu. There are three private-hire baths, open from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. at 2,200 yen including tax for 60 minutes. They are an option when you want to bathe with your children without worrying about other guests. The spring water is a sodium chloride spring.

Family-Friendly Features

Children are welcome to stay. Depending on the plan, co-sleeping is available for up to 3 guests or up to 6 guests. Rates for babies and toddlers are set in detail according to whether meals and bedding are included: on one plan it is 5,500 yen with meals and bedding and 3,300 yen with bedding but no meals, while on another plan meals for babies and toddlers cannot be provided. Room rates for elementary school children and preschool-age children are basically 70% of the adult rate, but on the Kids Family Plan the elementary school rate is a flat 8,000 yen and comes with children's amenities (a drawstring pouch, toothbrush and bubble ball) and a voucher for a free soft-serve ice cream. The Summer-Only Family Plan, for stays from July 1 to August 31, 2026, keeps that same rate and adds a fireworks set for the family to use. Both come as benefits when you book the applicable plan.
