A long-established Gero Onsen ryokan, Gero Onsen Suimeikan is a 3-minute walk from JR Gero Station and also offers a free shuttle bus. It is about 60 minutes from the Nakatsugawa IC via Route 257, and the 200-space parking lot is free of charge and can accommodate large vehicles. Guest rooms are spread across four buildings: Rinsenkaku, Hisenkaku, Sansui-kaku, and the detached Seiranso. Some rooms also have in-room baths supplied with onsen water.
Baths and onsen
Four types of onsen baths are available to enjoy in rotation:
- Observation communal bath (9th floor of Hisenkaku; open 24 hours)
- Shimodome no Yu (3rd floor of Rinsenkaku; for staying guests only; a purely Japanese-style cypress communal bath)
- Open-air bath (1st floor of Sansui-kaku; a rustic open-air bath)
- Private-hire onsen baths (4th floor of Rinsenkaku; Shichiri no Yu and Oribe no Yu, JPY 3,300 each for 60 minutes, 10 a.m.-9 p.m.) plus a ganbanyoku (heated-stone sauna) (JPY 3,300 for 60 minutes; maximum 2 people; rental wear and towels provided at no charge)
The onsen water comes from Gero Onsen, one of Japan's Three Famous Springs, with an onsen output of 2,300 L per minute. The open-air bath and observation communal bath are also available for day-use bathing. Tattoos are not permitted in the baths. Some communal baths may be unavailable for cleaning depending on the day of the week; please check the official large communal bath cleaning schedule.
Pools
The Suimei Health Club on the 1st floor of Sansui-kaku is a full-scale onsen pool and gym. It was certified by the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare as a designated exercise therapy facility in March 2016, and in October 2023 it was certified as an onsen therapy facility eligible for the medical expense deduction. The indoor pool is a 25-meter, 5-lane onsen pool with a depth of 110-125 cm, surrounded by large windows and fitted with an electrically opening and closing glass ceiling. The outdoor pool faces the garden and is available only in summer, with a depth of 50-90 cm. Hours are 9 a.m.-9:30 p.m. (last admission 9 p.m.; 8 a.m.-9:30 p.m. in July and August). The staying-guest rate is JPY 1,000 for adults (junior high school students and older) and JPY 500 for children (elementary school students), with unlimited use from check-in through checkout. Day use is JPY 1,500 from age 0, including for spectators. Swimsuit rental is JPY 550, training wear rental is JPY 550, and shoe rental is JPY 350. Free lessons with specialist instructors are also offered: aqua aerobics on Mondays and aquatic health exercises on Thursdays, 11 a.m.-12 p.m. The athletic gym is available to high school students and older. From July 1 to around August 20, the pools are for staying guests only.
Dining
Dining can be selected from the European-style restaurant Baden Baden (French course), China Room Ryuyuri (Chinese course), Ryori Chaya Kitano-ryo (Japanese kaiseki), Dining Tokiwa (Japanese-Western kaiseki), and in-room dining (Japanese kaiseki), depending on the plan. The Salon de Claire spa is also on site.
More family-friendly features
With four guest-room buildings, the property offers many places for families with children to spend time. In addition to the observation communal bath and open-air bath, there is a private-hire bath and a ganbanyoku (heated-stone sauna), so families can enjoy an onsen privately for up to 2 people and 60 minutes for JPY 3,300 when a communal bath is difficult with a baby. The indoor pool can be used repeatedly by staying guests for JPY 1,000. The 25-meter pool is too deep for young children, but combining it with the summer outdoor pool, which is 50-90 cm deep, suits a wide range of ages. Only a handful of accommodations in Japan let children play in an onsen pool while parents enjoy one of Japan's Three Famous Springs. Handrails are installed in the communal bath tubs. The facility can also accommodate meals for elderly guests and those with allergies. The facility also offers barrier-free accommodations, including wheelchair loans and accessible toilets.
