Gero Onsen Fugaku is a 22-room ryokan standing along the Hida River. The suite Japanese-Western room with a panoramic hinoki-cypress bath, newly built in 2017, has mattress-style bedding on a raised platform. It sleeps 2 to 5 guests and measures 76 sq m, so it works well for families (the hinoki bath is not fed by the hot spring). The river-side Japanese-Western rooms have both tatami and beds and sleep 2 to 3 guests. In the Japanese-Western rooms, co-sleeping for children aged 0 to 3 is limited to one child in total. The 16-tatami Japanese-style tatami rooms are spacious, sleeping 2 to 7 guests, and suit families and groups. The 10-tatami Japanese-style tatami rooms sleep 2 to 5 guests. For the Japanese-style room types you can choose smoking or non-smoking (deodorized), but there are no completely smoke-free rooms. Every room has a safe.
Dining
Breakfast and dinner are both served in your room as a rule, so families with young children can eat without worrying about other guests. Dinner is a kaiseki course with dishes such as Hida beef grilled with hoba miso (miso cooked on a dried magnolia leaf). A kids' meal is available as a menu item that must be reserved in advance. Children's chairs and tableware are provided as well. Allergies can be accommodated as far as possible if you let the ryokan know in advance, but severe food allergies cannot be accommodated, nor can requests made on the day.
Baths and Onsen
The panoramic communal bath and panoramic open-air bath look down over the streets of Gero and the Hida River, and they alternate between men and women. There is another communal bath on the first basement floor. There is no elevator to the communal bath and panoramic bath on the 5th floor or to the basement communal bath, so you need to use the stairs. The private-hire baths, Ibuki and Kawagiri, are made of Shigaraki ceramic ware and fed straight from the source, and the ryokan describes them as sized just right for babies. A private-hire bath costs 1,100 yen for 45 minutes and must be reserved. Under Gifu Prefecture regulations, children aged 7 and over cannot bathe with a parent of the opposite sex, and swimwear may not be worn in the communal baths or the open-air bath.

Access
The ryokan is a 10-minute walk from JR Gero Station, and a free shuttle from the station is available with advance reservation (pickup from 2:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., drop-off from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.). Free parking has room for about 30 cars, and cars can be moved in and out until 8 p.m. The hot-spring town and a footbath are about a 3-minute walk away, and a convenience store is about 5 minutes on foot. If you would like a late checkout, you can check out as late as 11 a.m. for 2,200 yen per room.
