Gero Onsen Sasara is an onsen ryokan with an antique feel, standing on high ground in Gero Onsen. Of its 44 rooms, 20 have their own open-air bath, so you can spend your stay with your baby in a room with its own onsen. Baby gear such as a bouncer and a baby bath is available, and a kids' meal is prepared for children who have not yet started elementary school. Some rooms in Moriyama-kan are reached through an underground passage with a flight of 28 steps down.
Rooms
The ryokan is made up of three buildings, Sasara-kan, Moriyama-kan and the detached Yurari, and 20 of its 44 rooms have their own open-air bath. In Sasara-kan, the standard Japanese-style tatami rooms Kinoka, Ballade and Kura no Ma are 55-60 sq m and sleep 1 to 6 guests. The special room Tsuki no Yubune is 115 sq m and sleeps 2 to 7 guests, while Kotemari in Moriyama-kan, which has a ceramic open-air bath, is 8 tatami mats and sleeps 2 to 3 guests. The detached Yurari has two open-air baths in its garden, a rock bath and a large-timber bath, and measures 120 sq m plus a 60 sq m garden, sleeping 8 guests. The rooms have humidifiers, and extra humidifiers are also available to borrow. The 10-tatami rooms in Moriyama-kan with a hinoki (Japanese cypress) open-air bath are reached through an underground connecting passage that includes 28 steps down along the way; there is an escalator for the way back up. Because Moriyama-kan has steps and stairs, guests who are unsteady on their feet are advised to stay in Sasara-kan.

In Sasara-kan and in the rooms with an open-air bath, you can also choose in-room dining, so you can take your time over a meal even with a young child. Depending on the plan, meals are served in a private dining room. For dinner, children under school age are served a Sasara-style kids' meal, and for preschool-age children who are co-sleeping, a children's meal is available as a separate order. The cooking is mainly Japanese, so the stock is made with ingredients such as bonito, dried sardines, kelp, shrimp, crab and scallop; if you have any concerns about allergies, you are strongly advised to consult the ryokan in advance.
Baths and Onsen
The water at Gero Onsen is a colorless, clear alkaline simple onsen. The in-room open-air baths and the communal baths all use water from the spring source, and you can bathe 24 hours a day, except during cleaning times. There is also a family bath, as well as a private-hire open-air rock bath with a shower that you can have to yourselves. In the rooms with an open-air bath, you can enjoy an onsen room together with your child. Guests staying in the standard rooms or the Japanese-Western rooms in Sasara-kan can use the private-hire open-air bath free of charge for 30 minutes. Ganbanyoku (heated-stone sauna, 50 minutes per session) is also available at a discounted rate.

Access
The ryokan is 3 minutes by taxi from Gero Station on the JR Takayama Main Line, and 60 minutes from Nakatsugawa IC on the Chuo Expressway via Route 257. The round-trip taxi shuttle between the station and the ryokan is free, and you can simply get into one of the taxis waiting in front of the station. Free parking is available for 40 cars. On every plan, checkout can be extended to 12 p.m. for an additional 1,600 yen per person.
