Gero Onsen Bosenkan is a long-established ryokan founded in 1818, with a 1,100-tsubo (about 3,600 sq m) Japanese-style garden. Alongside rooms with open-air baths and a room whose loft-style bunk bed is a hit with children, it has thoughtful touches for a family onsen trip: shallower children's baths in both the men's and women's communal baths, a baby bed in the changing room, and children's menus featuring Hida beef cuisine. There is also Yuagari Ikoi no Ma, a post-bath lounge in the basement where children can play.
Rooms
Bosenkan is a long-established ryokan founded in 1818, with a wide variety of rooms lining the Hida River. In Kawa no Ryo Shikisai, the rooms with open-air baths, the Japanese-style version has a ceramic open-air bath and the Western-style version a maki-wood one; the Western-style version is barrier-free. Sansuitei, a detached building set at the far end of the Japanese garden, has just three rooms, each with a hinoki cypress open-air bath. Loft Bed Room Yugamine on the 5th floor features a loft-style bunk bed with a peek-through window and a crawl-through entrance, built as a bit of fun for children (34 sq m, for 2 to 6 guests). Rikkasen, the Japanese-Western room on the 2nd floor, has twin beds, and for parties of 3 or more, futons are laid out in the tatami area. There are also Japanese-style tatami rooms of 8 tatami mats (1 to 3 guests), 15 tatami mats (2 to 7 guests) and 22.5 tatami mats (5 to 12 guests), so you can choose according to your group size. Plans generally allow co-sleeping for up to 2 children, and some plans allow up to 3.

A popular dinner choice is a kaiseki course centered on Hida beef grilled on a magnolia leaf with miso, and there are also plans built entirely around Hida beef, with roast beef, ajishabu and kamameshi (rice steamed in its own small pot). Kids' meals are prepared for both dinner and breakfast. Children's rates are set at 70% or 50% of the adult rate, and on some plans children at the 50% rate do not receive the Hida beef dishes. Meals accommodating allergies can also be arranged. Meals are served in venues such as the 18 private rooms of the Kangetsu restaurant and the Kansui restaurant; in-room dining is not offered. If you have any allergies, please let the ryokan know in advance.

Gero Onsen is an alkaline simple onsen (pH 8.9). It contains few dissolved substances and causes little irritation, so everyone from small children to older guests can enjoy it. The communal baths for both men and women have an indoor bath and an open-air bath, available from 3 p.m. until 10 a.m. the next morning, apart from cleaning times. The children's bath in the men's communal bath is a shallow 30 cm deep and intended for ages 3 to 6, while the children's bath in the women's communal bath is an open-air one with a newly added shallow, tatami-floored area for ages 0 to 3. Both bathing areas have frog and duck toys. The changing room of the women's communal bath has a baby bed. There are three private-hire baths, two of hinoki cypress and one of rock, at 2,200 yen including tax for 45 minutes per room; they cannot be booked in advance and are taken on a first-come, first-served basis at the front desk on the day. Access
The ryokan is about 5 minutes from Gero Station by car or taxi, and a free shuttle bus is also available, departing at 2:30 p.m., 3 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. There are three parking areas: in front of the entrance (6 to 7 cars), across from the entrance (20 cars) and along the river about a 2-minute walk away (about 80 cars), all free for staying guests. There is also a plan with an 11 a.m. checkout.
