forumWhat families say

Rakuten Travel rating 4.15 out of 5 (83 reviews). Guests report that their children loved the calm, shallow sea right in front of the property, that the kids were delighted with the all-you-can-drink soft drinks, and that there are play items to borrow. Many are satisfied with the BBQ ingredients, and breakfast is a hot sandwich you make yourself. On the downside, guests point out that the toilet and shower are outside the room and have no roof, which is inconvenient in the rain and at night.

Overview

8POINT RESORT AWAJI ISLAND is a glamping site of 7 dome tents, standing right by the sea in Murotsu, Awaji, Hyogo. There are 7 m domes (about 39 sq m, 4 beds, up to 4 guests) and 6 m domes (about 28 sq m, with 2 or 3 beds), and each dome has its own private toilet and shower building right next to it or in front of it. Dinner centers on an outdoor BBQ of Awaji beef and Awaji Island vegetables, switched to sukiyaki in bad weather. For children, ages 0 to 6 stay free with no meals and no bed, in which case they co-sleep in an adult's bed. Children aged 7 to 11 pay half the adult rate. Cribs and other baby items are not mentioned, so please ask in advance if you need them.

Rooms

The rooms are dome tents, 7 in total. The 7 m dome (a "Fours" quad room) is about 39 sq m with 4 beds, sleeps up to 4 guests and comes with its own parking space. The 6 m dome is about 28 sq m and comes in two versions: a Twin with 2 beds for up to 2 guests, and a Triple with 3 beds for up to 3 guests; parking for these is shared. All the beds are single size. The hotel's FAQ gives them as about 100 cm x 200 cm, while its room descriptions call them 110 cm beds. The beds are a low Simmons type, and no figure is given for their height. Because local regulations do not allow a toilet or shower inside the domes, each dome has a toilet and shower building right next to it or in front of it, for your group only and not shared. Taking a child to the toilet at night means stepping outside the dome first. The shower has a Mirable shower head, and no bathtub is mentioned. Every dome has heating and air conditioning, but because of the nature of dome tents, the temperature inside may change with the outside temperature and the weather. There is Wi-Fi, a refrigerator, a hair dryer and a safe, and smoking is not allowed inside the domes. There is a private BBQ space. The tent sauna (fee applies) costs 5,500 yen for 90 minutes and must be reserved by the day before; it may be canceled in strong winds, and you must wear a swimsuit or a T-shirt. No age restriction is stated. Rooms are not cleaned during multi-night stays; ask the staff if you would like fresh towels.

Dining

The dinner plans are an Awaji beef and Awaji Island vegetable BBQ, sukiyaki, a premium BBQ of Awaji chicken and Kobe pork, and a seafood jjigae hotpot, which the English-language information describes as a spicy hotpot. The menu changes with the season and the weather. On BBQ plans, the last dinner service is at 7 p.m., and grills and related equipment must be returned by 8 p.m. The BBQ is held outdoors, and in winter it is windy and bitterly cold, so warm clothing and similar precautions are recommended. In bad weather or strong winds, dinner is switched to the sukiyaki course at the property's discretion. Breakfast is an egg hot sandwich set of bread, ham, cheese, scrambled eggs, yogurt and juice, which you toast yourself. On plans without meals, you may bring your own food. A BBQ set rents for 2,000 yen, and a kitchen knife and cutting board are provided free of charge. On BBQ plans and plans without meals there is no washing-up area; bringing your own grill, charcoal or electric cooking appliances is not allowed, and the BBQ set cannot be used inside the room. There is no mention of a kids' menu, children's chairs or allergy accommodation.

Family-Friendly Features

The hotel presents its spacious dome tents as well suited to families. Child rates are as follows: ages 0 to 6 are treated as young children and stay free with no meals and no bed; elementary school children aged 7 to 11 pay half the adult rate; and children aged 12 and over, as well as junior high school students and up, pay the adult rate. The hotel says the low beds are easy to use even with small children. If you choose the free option for ages 0 to 6 with no meals and no bed, your child co-sleeps in an adult's single bed. How many children can co-sleep in one bed, and whether children without a bed count toward the dome's capacity, are not stated. Cribs, baby futons and bed guards are not mentioned either, so please ask if you need them. Bringing charcoal, portable gas stoves or any other fire sources is prohibited.

Places to Play

There is also a shore right in front of the property where children can paddle at the water's edge, but it is not a swimming beach. Murotsu Beach is about a 15-minute walk away, and guests who want to swim are asked to use a beach where swimming is permitted. Molkky is billed as a game children and adults can enjoy together, and it is available to borrow along with board games. The fishing experience on the partner fishing boat Eishin Maru is open to beginners and recommended for families, and you can have your catch cooked on the spot. For campfires, 6 m domes can rent a fire sheet, fire pit and firewood set for 1,500 yen, while 7 m domes have their own campfire facilities, with firewood at 1,500 yen per bundle. Campfires may not be available in bad weather, and embers are collected at 9 p.m. A Dutch oven rents for 500 yen, with firewood and a fire pit rented separately.

Access

Hokudan IC is about 10 to 12 minutes away on foot, and highway buses run from Osaka and Kobe, so you can visit without a car. There is a convenience store right in front of the property. Check-in is from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and checkout is at 10 a.m.; on plans with meals, check in by 6 p.m. Rakuten Travel's plans state that after 7 p.m., meal plans may be changed to a different menu or treated as canceled, so if you are running late, contact the property in advance. The FAQ and facility information are written in both Japanese and English.
