Echigo Yuzawa Onsen Shosenkaku Kagetsu is a 5-minute walk from Echigo-Yuzawa Station, and its warmth makes it feel like coming home. Rooms
The standard Japanese-style tatami rooms are generously sized from 10 tatami mats (40 sq m) and sleep 1 to 4 guests. Every room has free Wi-Fi, an air purifier and a humidifier, plus its own bath and toilet, which is reassuring on a stay with young children and plenty of luggage. The rooms with an open-air bath are Japanese-Western in style and come in five types: Tachimachizuki and Imachizuki (94 sq m, for 2 to 6 guests), Nemachizuki (63 sq m, for 2 to 5 guests), Fushimachizuki (57 sq m, for 2 guests) and Fukemachizuki (47 sq m, for 2 guests). The modern Japanese-style rooms, renovated in July 2019, are bed-style rooms with a mattress laid on a raised platform, giving you a different way to sleep from a tatami room with futons.
Dining
Meals are served either at Fuga, a restaurant where dishes are finished in front of you, or at the Japanese dining room Matsukaze; you cannot choose the venue. If you would like chair seating or need to use a wheelchair, please let the ryokan know in advance. A kids' menu is available, and if anyone has a food allergy or an ingredient they would rather avoid, the kitchen can accommodate it when you get in touch beforehand. Breakfast, billed as "Japan's best healthy breakfast," centers on freshly cooked Uonuma Koshihikari rice.
Baths and Onsen
The ryokan has four open-air baths, two indoor baths and a private-hire bath, and the water is 100% natural onsen flowing straight from the source as a rule. The communal bath also uses a circulation system for hygiene management, and the baths are available 24 hours. Echigo Yuzawa onsen is a gentle simple onsen (59.2 degrees Celsius) that babies can bathe in with you. Do note that the communal bath is closed from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. for cleaning and from midnight to 12:30 a.m. while the men's and women's curtains are swapped, so keep those times in mind when planning your baby's bath. The private-hire bath, Danran, costs 2,200 yen for 45 minutes by reservation; as there is only one, booking in advance is recommended.
