About Echigo-Yuzawa Station
Echigo-Yuzawa Station is a JR East station in Yuzawa, Niigata Prefecture, served by the Joetsu Shinkansen and the conventional Joetsu Line. The Shinkansen "Tanigawa" trains start and terminate here, and some "Toki" trains also stop here. The fastest trip from Tokyo Station takes 66 minutes. During ski season, a Shinkansen branch line also takes you to Gala Yuzawa Station. Many trains on the Hokuetsu Express Hokuhoku Line run straight through to this station via the Joetsu Line. The area around the station is the heart of the Echigo-Yuzawa Onsen hot spring town, lined with traditional inns (ryokan) and hotels, and the plaza at the west exit has a foot bath. The station building, CoCoLo Yuzawa, houses souvenir shops, a food alley for snacking as you stroll, and Ponshukan, a sake (Japanese rice wine) shop.

Travel tips
The standard transfer time is 6 minutes, so on days when you switch between the Shinkansen and a conventional train, choosing a connection with extra time will keep things relaxed. Ekiben can be bought on Gangi-dori and at the NewDays in front of the ticket gates. Echigo-Yuzawa is a heavy snow area in winter, and studless (winter) tires are a must if you come by car. Families not used to snowy roads will feel safer taking the Shinkansen.
Best season
If you want to play in the snow or ski, winter (December to March) is the best season. The Shinkansen branch line to Gala Yuzawa Station runs only during ski season, and when the summer slopes are open, a dedicated shuttle bus from this station is used instead. From spring to autumn, you can enjoy the green highlands, cool weather, and hot springs.
Getting there
It takes as little as 66 minutes from Tokyo Station by Shinkansen. By car, the nearest interchange is Yuzawa IC on the Kan-etsu Expressway, about 1 hour 50 minutes from Nerima IC.
