Choseikan is a Japanese-style ryokan founded in 1912 in Nagatoro, Saitama, a 3-minute walk from Nagatoro Station on the Chichibu Railway. All 22 rooms - 21 Japanese-style tatami rooms and 1 Western-style room - face the Nagatoro Gorge and the garden, and the kaiseki cuisine built around mountain and river ingredients is the ryokan's specialty. Children's meals are prepared by age, and the 20-tatami second-floor room is a corner room that puts families with babies at ease. The "Staying Together with Babies and Young Children" plan comes with in-room dining and baby items available to borrow, making this an easy ryokan to use with small children.
Rooms
There are 22 rooms in all - 21 Japanese-style tatami rooms and 1 Western-style room - and every one of them faces the Nagatoro Gorge and the garden. The standard tatami rooms are 12 tatami mats on the first floor (sleeping up to 6) and 10 tatami mats on the second floor (sleeping up to 5); in the second-floor 10-tatami rooms, exactly one simple bed (a kiri rakune paulownia-wood bed) can be added. The ryokan's largest room, a 20-tatami second-floor room with a 6-tatami antechamber sleeping up to 8, is a corner room, which puts families with children and babies at ease. Its in-room bath is finished in hinoki cypress, with a generous washing area and tub - roomy enough to serve as a family bath.
Dining
Dinner is served in one of four settings: the private dining room Iroriann Hanamizuki, in your room, in the restaurant, or in the small banquet room or hall. Children's meals differ by age: high school and junior high school students have the same kaiseki cuisine and Japanese set meal as adults; elementary school children have a children's box-tray dinner; and children under school age aged 2 and over have a kids' meal at dinner and a plate for young children at breakfast. If you would like meals for a child under school age, you need to select the "with meals" option when booking. The kitchen does not prepare allergy-adapted dishes, and food is served as listed on the menu, so accommodating allergies means setting portions aside from what is served.
Baths and Onsen
The communal baths comprise a rock bath for men and a hinoki cypress bath for women, each with an open-air bath and an indoor bath. The open-air baths use onsen water, and the indoor baths use bamboo vinegar. They are open from check-in until midnight and again from 6 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. the next morning, and the men's and women's baths are not swapped. There is no private-hire bath, but the 20-tatami special room has a larger indoor bath, and the rooms with an open-air bath have a round tub. An elevator reaches the first basement floor where the communal baths are, but there are several steps inside the bathing areas, so the facility is not fully barrier-free.
Family-Friendly Features
Children's yukata are available from size 100 cm, roughly for children aged 3 and over; pajamas are not provided. The "Staying Together with Babies and Young Children" plan is the only plan that guarantees in-room dinner and breakfast and that offers baby items such as an insulated kettle, a diaper-only trash bin, a baby bath and baby soap to borrow. On that same plan you may also bathe with your baby in the communal bath, and a baby bath is available to borrow. Note, however, that no futons made specially for babies or children are provided; children are given the same adult-size futons. On that plan a young-child rate applies from age 0.
