About Suizenji Jojuen Garden

Suizenji Jojuen Garden is a stroll-style landscape garden in Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City, dating from the early Edo period and built by the Hosokawa family, the lords of Kumamoto. Centered on a pond fed by natural spring water, the garden features an artificial hill that represents Mount Fuji and scenery modeled on the 53 stations of the Tokaido, the old highway between Edo (now Tokyo) and Kyoto. It covers about 73,000 square meters and includes a noh theater, Izumi Shrine, an exhibition hall, and a rest area. The Kokin Denju-no-Ma, a historic hall associated with the secret teaching of classical poetry, was moved here in the first year of the Taisho era (1912) and is another highlight. The garden is designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty and a National Historic Site.
