About Sakitsu Village
Sakitsu Village is a fishing hamlet on Yokaku Bay in Kawaura-machi, Amakusa, Kumamoto Prefecture, known as a home of the Hidden Christians, who practiced their faith in secret during Japan's ban on Christianity. In 2018 it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki and Amakusa Region. Houses crowd along a roughly 700 m stretch of the old national highway, where you'll find 19 wooden terraces called "kake" jutting out over the sea and about 40 "toya," alleys less than 1 m wide that run between the houses. Both are still in everyday use. Scattered around the village are the Gothic-style Sakitsu Church, Sakitsu Suwa Shrine, and the Maria statue standing at the tip of the headland facing the sea.

Travel tips
