Taishoro is a purely Japanese-style ryokan at the foot of Mount Miwa in Sakurai, Nara, and an official purveyor to Omiwa Shrine. It is close to Asuka, Hasedera Temple and the Yamanobe no Michi trail, and is a family-run establishment that has been in business since the first year of the Taisho era (1912). Dinner can be served either in your room or in the dining room. The bath is not an onsen but a communal bath of heated water, and bathing hours are limited to 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Accommodation plans include child rates, and a 14-tatami Japanese-style tatami room is available for families and groups.
Rooms
This ryokan known for its cuisine sits at the foot of Mount Miwa in Sakurai, Nara, with guest rooms and a corridor arranged around a quiet, composed inner courtyard. The Yoshino type is a 12-tatami Japanese-style tatami room made up of two connected 6-tatami rooms (tatami mats are the traditional Japanese measure of room size), and it carries on old Japanese traditions with features such as yukimi shoji sliding screens and cedar-plank ceilings. Its washlet toilet is located next to the room. The Wakakusa type is a 10-tatami room in the larger Kyoma tatami size, combining an 8-tatami room with a 2-tatami antechamber, and it has a private washlet toilet inside the room. For families and groups there is a 14-tatami Japanese-style tatami room with a private washlet toilet, which can be booked from 2 guests. In all room types, the washbasin is located outside the guest room. All rooms have air conditioning and heating, a kimono hanger, a safe, yukata, towels, a toothbrush set, a kettle and an LCD television (in all but a few rooms). Under the revised Health Promotion Act, the whole building and every room are non-smoking.
Dining
Breakfast is served in the banquet hall or the dining room, and dinner in your room or the dining room. Because dinner can be served in your room, families with young children can eat without worrying about other guests. The futons are put away while you are having breakfast, so if you would rather they were left out, please say so at check-in.
Baths
The bath is not fed by an onsen; the water is heated, and it is a communal bath. There is a tiled bath with a Shigaraki-ware tub (for 3 to 5 people) and a Japanese-made hinoki cypress bath (for 1 to 2 people). Bathing is available from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. (until 11 p.m. on select days). There is no bathing service the following morning, and only a shower can be arranged on request. Bath towels and disposable razors are lent free of charge, except for training-camp group stays. The bathrooms are not generously sized, so the ryokan advises guests who place particular importance on bathing to consider using other facilities as well.
