Palm Beach Resort Hotel Oshima, in Okata on Izu Oshima, is one of the largest places to stay on Oshima, able to host more than 50 guests. Wrapped in rich natural surroundings, it is a resort where you can make the most of the sea and of the island's food.

For families, the biggest draw is how close the sea is. Nodahama swimming beach, one of Oshima's leading spots for playing in the sea, is about a 5-minute walk away, and in summer the family can swim, snorkel and explore the rocky shore. Nodahama is popular for fishing and diving too, so it covers everything from a child's very first time at the sea to more serious ocean activities.

The on-site pool can also be used (summer only, with an advance inquiry required). Even a small child who is uneasy about the sea can enjoy playing in the water there with peace of mind.

Meals are the hotel's pride, built around island ingredients and led by bekko, a local specialty of Izu Oshima. The whole family can taste flavors you find only on the island. There are activities that adults will enjoy as well, such as a scenic drive along the Sunset Palm Line and a kickboxing session at an affiliated gym.

Guest rooms come in both Japanese-style tatami and Western-style layouts, so group trips and three-generation family travel are easily accommodated, with the roominess that only a large property can offer.

Getting here takes about 10 minutes by car from Okata Port, and a shuttle to the port is available if you reserve by two days in advance. The location also makes it easy to reach places that children enjoy, such as hiking on Mount Mihara, Tsubakihana Garden and Oshima Park Zoo, where admission is free. Do note that the pool is sometimes left empty for cleaning and similar reasons, so if you are hoping to use it, it is worth checking in advance.
