Hotel Akamon Izu Oshima

Hotel Akamon Izu Oshima, in the Motomachi district of Izu Oshima, is a hot-spring inn with something rare on the island: a spring source rising on its own grounds. Its pride is a hinoki-cypress open-air bath fed by Tametomo no Yu, which rises on land tied to Minamoto no Tametomo, and you can take your time in the warm water of the inn's own source with the sea breeze around you.

There are two types of guest rooms. The purely Japanese-style tatami rooms are lovely with the scent of wood, and their real appeal is the view: the sea and the Izu Peninsula spread out in front of you, with plenty of room for the family to settle in. The other option is the two detached log cabins. Each cabin is yours in its entirety, so you can spend your time freely without worrying about other guests - ideal for families with young children or for three-generation trips. Even with a baby who cries at night or wakes early, the separate space lets you stay at ease.

Hotel Akamon has another side to it as a museum, where exhibits about Chinzei Hachiro Minamoto no Tametomo bring the historical background of Izu Oshima to life. For children, it makes a small learning moment: a little island history alongside a soak in the onsen.

The location, in the Motomachi district, is close to Motomachi Port, where the ferries and jetfoils arrive and depart, which makes it a convenient base for sightseeing around the island. It is also well placed for spots families enjoy, such as hiking on Mount Mihara, Chinka Garden where children can meet squirrels, and Oshima Park Zoo, which is free to enter.
