Guesthouse Jinnomaru Oshima stands in Motomachi on Izu Oshima. It is a reasonably priced room-only guesthouse with a good stock of amenities, and its greatest appeal is an excellent location about a 3-minute walk from Motomachi Port.

That location really is the standout feature. Motomachi Port, where the ferries and jet ferries dock, is about 3 minutes away on foot, so you can drop your bags right after stepping off the boat and head out unencumbered. Restaurants are close by, as is Gojinka Onsen, the island's well-known hot spring with views over the sea, so you can use the guesthouse as a base and walk to meals and onsen around the island. Not having to worry about driving is a welcome thing on a trip with children.

The guest rooms are 6-tatami-mat Japanese-style tatami rooms. Being tatami, they make it easy to put a small child down to sleep or for the whole family to sleep side by side with room to spare. There is a communal bath in the building, so you can take an unhurried bath at the guesthouse itself. A mini kitchen is provided as well, so you can warm up meals for your children, baby food or a late-night snack, or do some simple cooking, and shape the day around your family's plans. Free Wi-Fi is also available.

Because the stay is room-only, dinner means tasting the island's produce at an eatery or izakaya in Motomachi. It suits families who like to put their itinerary together freely.

The guesthouse sits in the Motomachi district, well placed for getting around by bus or rental car to spots families can enjoy together, such as hiking on Mount Mihara, Tsubakihana Garden where you can meet squirrels, and Oshima Park Zoo, which is free to enter.
