Nanki Shirahama Kachofugetsu is a 24-room ryokan on high ground in Shirahama-cho, Wakayama. To protect guests' privacy, it has no communal bath; instead, every room has a natural hot spring semi-open-air bath available 24 hours, with tubs of different character such as wooden baths and barrel baths, so the family can enjoy the onsen on their own. The panda-themed rooms accommodate co-sleeping and extra beds, and stays with babies are welcome. Children's meals are also available, including a kids' plate and a kids' kaiseki course.
Rooms
The 24 rooms are made up mainly of 37 sq m standard rooms, along with an 80 sq m special room, three 50 sq m semi-special rooms, a barrier-free room and a designer room. The Japanese-Western standard rooms have a tatami area where extra futons can be laid out. The Panda Rooms (rooms 105 and 106), decorated with a panda motif, are Western-style and Japanese-Western rooms of 37 sq m for 2 to 4 guests, and can combine co-sleeping with an extra bed. Some rooms have tatami flooring, and in-room dining is possible there for an additional charge, subject to confirmation in advance. In-room dining can also be discussed for the barrier-free room and the special room. Some rooms can be used as connecting rooms with an advance reservation.
Baths and Onsen
To protect guests' privacy, there is no communal bath. Instead, every room has a natural hot spring semi-open-air bath, so families can soak at their own pace, on their own, at any hour of the day. The tubs differ in character from room to room: wooden baths, barrel baths and ceramic baths. The special room alone has an indoor bath and a fully open-air rock bath. The spring water is a bicarbonate spring, said to be beneficial for gastrointestinal complaints, joint pain and recovery from fatigue.
Dining
Dinner is a kaiseki course built around Wakayama ingredients, and breakfast is the Hanakago no Sai set with a small Japanese-Western buffet. Meals booked at the child rate are served as a kids' kaiseki course. Children who have not yet started elementary school, from age 4 up, are normally booked without meals or bedding, while children ages 0 to 3 stay free of charge. If you would like a meal for a young child, a kids' plate can be prepared for an additional 3,300 yen, with advance application required. Allergy accommodation is limited to egg, shellfish, mollusks, crustaceans, dairy products, gourd-family produce, buckwheat, mushrooms, nuts and fruit; wheat and soy cannot be accommodated.
Family-Friendly Features
Stays with babies are possible. Guests of any age may book, as long as it does not disturb other guests. In-room dining can also be discussed, for an additional charge. The building is almost entirely step-free, and one barrier-free room is available. A summer-vacation plan comes with extras for children, including the loan of a sandbox set, water guns and a beach ball, and a gift of handheld fireworks, available only to guests booked on that plan.
Access
The ryokan is about 15 minutes by car from JR Shirahama Station and Nanki-Shirahama Airport, and about 15 minutes by car from Adventure World. On-site parking, with more spaces than there are rooms, is free of charge. If you are arriving by train or plane, a shuttle to and from JR Shirahama Station and Nanki-Shirahama Airport is also available by reservation.
