Overview
Kishu Shirahama Onsen Musashi is a 148-room Japanese-style ryokan a 1-minute walk from Shirarahama Beach, the symbol of Shirahama. It draws on two spring sources - Saimei-yu, which the ryokan owns, and Suzushi-yu, close to the sea - so guests can soak in the communal bath, the open-air bath and a private-hire semi-open-air bath. The buffet venue has children's chairs, children's tableware and a portable bassinet for babies, the changing room has a baby bed, and the bathing area has a baby chair. A generous range of free rental items for guest rooms, including baby futons and Bumbo chairs, makes this a ryokan where stays with young children are easy.
Rooms
All 148 rooms are Japanese-style tatami rooms, divided among three floors: Hanare Hototogisu (formerly Kusunoki-kan), Aoi-kan and Watei. Hanare Hototogisu is reached along a connecting corridor with stairs, so the other rooms are recommended for guests who are unsteady on their feet and for small children; in return, its rates are lower. Aoi-kan has no view, as a building blocks the sea, but its rates are appealingly reasonable. Watei has rooms looking out over Shirarahama Beach, and guests can also use Tenku, a view bath for staying guests only. Every room has a bathroom and toilet, an air purifier with a humidifying function, and a bidet toilet seat.
Dining
For dinner you can choose between a buffet with Japanese, Western and Chinese dishes, and a kaiseki course made with Kishu ingredients. The buffet venue offers a wide choice of children's menu items, and it can be entered with a wheelchair or a stroller. For the kaiseki, ingredients you are allergic to or dislike can be changed, with advance notice required. For children who have not yet started elementary school, extra-order dinner dishes include a kids' meal, omurice (omelet-wrapped rice), plain rice porridge and karaage fried chicken. Elementary school children are served the same kaiseki as adults.
Baths and Onsen
Guests can enjoy two spring sources: Saimei-yu, owned by the ryokan, in the communal bath and the medium-sized bath, and Suzushi-yu, close to the sea, in the open-air bath and the private-hire semi-open-air baths. A baby chair for bathing is provided in the bathing area, a baby bed in the changing room, and a wall-mounted baby seat in the restroom, so you can bathe together with your baby. There are 2 private-hire semi-open-air baths, which staying guests can use for 45 minutes for 3,300 yen; a portable bassinet is provided there as well, making them easy for families with babies. Note that there are stairs inside the communal bath, so if you are concerned that this may be hard on a small child, contacting the ryokan in advance is recommended.

Children's yukata are also provided free of charge, in sizes from 65 cm to 155 cm in 15 cm increments. When a child who has not yet started elementary school co-sleeps, the charge is set by age. On the buffet plan, ages 0 to 1 pay nothing for the facility fee, dinner or breakfast; ages 2 to 3 pay a facility fee of 2,200 yen, with dinner and breakfast free; and ages 4 to 6 pay the 2,200-yen facility fee plus 5,390 yen for dinner and 1,650 yen for breakfast, for a total of 9,240 yen. The kaiseki plan uses the same facility-fee age brackets, but meals for babies and toddlers are chosen as extra-order dishes for each dinner and breakfast. If you would like an adult futon, an additional 3,300 yen applies on either plan. Guests who book the Recommended Plan for Travel with a Baby can also use plan-only rental items - baby wipes, baby shampoo, baby soap and baby food (one meal) - which are not available with a standard booking. Formula and baby food are not provided, so please bring your own; staff can warm them, and you may bring them into the buffet venue.
Access
Shirarahama Beach is a 1-minute walk away, and the rocky shore with a view of Engetsu Island is a 3-minute walk. If you come by car, there is free parking for 220 cars, and you can drive right up to the entrance on arrival. The ryokan does not run a shuttle from JR Shirahama Station, so guests are directed to the public bus or a taxi. Staying guests may also use the free shuttle bus operated by the Shirahama Onsen Ryokan Cooperative Association. A Lawson and a FamilyMart are a short walk away, along with a 24-hour supermarket, and Shirahama Hamayu Hospital is about 5 minutes by car. Adventure World is about 10 to 15 minutes by car.
