forumWhat families say

Rakuten Travel rating 3.17 out of 5 (809 reviews). Many guests say the location is convenient, close to the approach to Kotohira-gu Shrine, with restaurants and convenience stores nearby. Guests praise the kaiseki dinners as generous and tasty, and some reviews compliment the breakfast. On the other hand, guests point out that the building is old, that in winter the open-air bath water is lukewarm and the changing room is cold, and that the rooftop open-air bath feels as though it could be seen from the surroundings. There are few reviews from families with children, but some say that, traveling with a 0-year-old, they used the private-hire bath so the family could bathe together at leisure, and that the children's meals came in generous portions.

Overview

Kotohira Yachiyo Hotel is an onsen ryokan in Kotohira, the town at the gates of Konpira-san, founded in the 10th year of the Kyoho era. There is a wide range of room types, including a 70 sq m Premium Japanese-Western Room, rooms with a semi-open-air bath, and traditional Japanese-style tatami rooms where you sleep on futon bedding. With an in-room dining plan or the paid private-hire bath Fukufune, your family can have time to yourselves. The information for some accommodation plans says staff will rewarm milk or food you bring for babies and toddlers, and the hotel also says it can accommodate allergies in its meals. No crib or baby futon lending is mentioned, and on the Rakuten Travel and Jalan plans, a charge of 3,300 yen applies even for children under school age who use neither meals nor futon bedding.

Rooms

There are Japanese-style tatami rooms and Japanese-Western rooms, and all rooms are non-smoking. The Premium Japanese-Western Room is 70 sq m, with its own private bath in a hinoki cypress tub and a dining room; plans for this room are for 2 to 4 guests. The two rooms with a semi-open-air bath, Kemari (stone) and Ogatama (hinoki cypress), each have a private view bath inside the room, filled with free-flowing water you can soak in at any time; plans for these rooms are also for 2 to 4 guests. The Modern Japanese-style room has two areas, of 4 and 6 tatami mats, that can be partitioned off from each other, and it has a bath in the room. The Modern Japanese-Western room joins an 8-tatami sitting room to a twin bedroom, and from the bathroom you can see across to the bedroom through a clear window; the hotel says it makes staying with children even more fun. The Japanese-Western room with a 10-tatami Japanese-style tatami room and two semi-double beds is suited to family stays, and futon bedding can be laid out in the tatami area. In the traditional Japanese-style rooms, such as the 10-tatami room, you sleep on futon bedding. Rooms with a bath and toilet have a Western-style en-suite bathroom, and some rooms have a toilet only. No information is published on lending cribs or baby futons, so please confirm with the hotel.

Dining

Breakfast and dinner are served either in your room or in a dining hall. On an in-room dining plan, you can have dinner and breakfast in your room, and in the Premium Japanese-Western Room, your room attendant serves the meal in the room's own dining room. If you stay in a room with a semi-open-air bath, meals are served in the dining venue; the main hall is a Japanese-style space where you take off your shoes. Besides in-room dining, plans with meals in a private dining room are also offered. On in-room dining plans, groups of 5 or more are served in a separate banquet room. Dinner centers on kaiseki (Japanese multi-course) cuisine featuring fish from the Seto Inland Sea and beef from Kagawa Prefecture. The winter-only pork shabu-shabu kaiseki uses pork from the prefecture, and the hotel describes it as a course that children can enjoy easily too. A kids' meal appears in the meal photos, but its conditions and price are not listed in our information, so please confirm when booking. On plans that include dinner, dinner cannot be served if you check in after the meal start time.

Reservations are required: the hotel's onsen information asks you to reserve in advance, while the plan information on Rakuten Travel and Jalan says reservations are taken after check-in, so please confirm with the hotel how to reserve. The bathing tax is 150 yen per adult and free for ages 0 to 11. It is not stated whether children who are not yet out of diapers may go into the tubs of the communal bath or the open-air bath, so please check in advance.
