Kotohira Onsen Kotosankaku

forumWhat families say

Rakuten Travel rating 4.37 out of 5 (3,121 reviews). Guests find it convenient that they can check how busy the communal bath is via an app and pick a quieter time to bathe. Families also report that the rooms were spacious enough for four people, two children and two adults, and that the staff were kind and helpful. On the other hand, some guests were a little bothered by children running around and splashing water at each other in the communal bath.

Overview

Kotohira Onsen Kotosankaku is an onsen ryokan at the gateway to Konpira-san, with one of the largest onsen communal baths in Shikoku. Children ages 0 to 2 can stay free of charge when co-sleeping. Rooms come in a wide range of types, including Japanese-style tatami rooms, Japanese-Western rooms and rooms with an open-air bath, so families can choose what suits them. For meals, a kids' meal is prepared for children under school age, and there are also plans where dinner is served in a private room. Low-allergen menus can be discussed for guests with allergies, and families may bring in their own baby food. There is also a coin laundry on site.

Rooms

The ryokan has two buildings, Sansuikan and Hitenkaku, with a wide choice of room types: Japanese-style tatami rooms, Western-style rooms, Japanese-Western rooms and rooms with an open-air bath. Sansuikan has Western-style twin rooms (16 sq m, with two beds 120 cm wide), Japanese-style tatami rooms (12.5 tatami mats) and Japanese-Western rooms (10 tatami mats plus twin beds), while Hitenkaku has Japanese-style tatami rooms (12.5 tatami mats), among others. The in-room open-air baths are not fed by the hot spring. Children ages 0 to 2 can stay free of charge, co-sleeping, if they do not need meals or bedding. For children ages 3 and over who have not yet started elementary school and do not need meals or bedding, a facility fee of 2,750 yen including tax applies.

Dining

For dinner, elementary school children are served the same menu as adults, while children under school age booked with meals and bedding receive a kids' meal. There are also plans where dinner is served in a private room. On buffet plans, children's dishes and desserts are available as well. For guests with food allergies, the ryokan recommends its low-allergen menu, which covers the 8 specified allergenic ingredients plus soy and sesame; it can be arranged if you contact the ryokan at least 3 days before your stay date. For guests with severe symptoms, safe foods such as retort-pouch meals may be brought in, and you can also ask about heating them in a microwave and borrowing tableware.

Baths and Onsen

On the first floor of Sansuikan are the communal baths Konpira no Yu and Kabuki no Yu, which have open-air baths and saunas. Guests staying in Hitenkaku can also use Yakumo no Yu, the building's own view bath on the 10th floor. The spring water is a simple radioactive cold mineral spring. The open-air baths in the guest rooms are not fed by the hot spring.

Family-friendly features

There is a coin laundry on site for a fee, handy for washing children's clothes when they get dirty. There is also a game corner. Humidifiers are available to borrow.
