forumWhat families say

Rakuten Travel rating 4.61 out of 5 (1,060 reviews). Some guests mention that the private-hire open-air bath was free to use and clean, and reviews also note that meals were served in a private room with ample portions. Guests rate the location, a little under 1 km from Konpira-san, as convenient for visiting the shrine. On the other hand, some point out that the buildings have a maze-like layout, and that they nearly got lost finding their way back to their room.

Overview

Konpira Onsen Kotohira Kadan is a ryokan with a 400-year history, set at the foot of the forest surrounding Kotohiragu Shrine. You can stay in one of three buildings arranged around the garden (Fujimidai, Shogetsu Terrace and Sansuikaku) or in a sukiya-style detached villa, built in the refined style of a traditional teahouse. Children under 3 who need no meals or bedding stay free, and co-sleeping is limited to the number of adults staying. Children's items such as a bouncer, a Bumbo seat and a baby bath are available to borrow, the staff will warm baby food and milk, and they will also wash and sterilize baby bottles. There are 2 private-hire onsen open-air baths for staying guests only. The detached villa Choseiden is limited to junior high school students and older.

Rooms

The guest rooms are spread across three buildings, Fujimidai, Shogetsu Terrace and Sansuikaku, plus sukiya-style detached villas dotted around the garden, and every room is non-smoking. The Fujimidai Japanese-style tatami room is 41 sq m and takes 1 to 5 guests. The Fujimidai Japanese-Western Room with Private Open-Air Bath is 84 sq m and sleeps up to 7, with a 10-tatami Japanese-style room and a twin room; bedding is 2 semi-double beds (120 cm wide) and up to 5 sets of futon bedding. The Japanese-style tatami rooms in Sansuikaku are 38 sq m: Type A has 10 tatami mats plus a broad window-side space and sleeps up to 5, and Type B has 8 tatami mats plus a broad window-side space and sleeps up to 3. In December 2026, Sansuikaku is scheduled to open double rooms created by renovating its Japanese-style rooms, so for stays from December onward, please check which rooms are available. The rooms in Shogetsu Terrace are Western-style: the Triple is 62 sq m for 2 to 3 guests, and the Twin is 47 sq m for 1 to 2 guests. The Barrier-Free Twin on the 3rd floor of Shogetsu Terrace (1 room) has a sloped entrance and a completely step-free interior. Enjukaku, a sukiya-style detached villa, is 105 sq m and takes 2 to 6 guests. The detached villa Choseiden is limited to junior high school students and older, so families with children of elementary school age or younger cannot stay there.

Dining

The main dining venue is Keyaki, the main dining room on the 2nd floor of Shogetsu Terrace, which is reached by stairs. For children booked with meals, dinner is a children's kaiseki (multi-course) meal on the elementary school rate and a kids' meal on the rate for children under school age; breakfast is a Japanese breakfast on the elementary school rate and a children's breakfast on the rate for children under school age. Extra dishes such as a kids' plate (1,581 yen) and a la carte items like udon can also be ordered. In-room dining is offered in the detached villas Choseiden and Enjukaku and in Fujimidai's Japanese-Western Room with Private Open-Air Bath and Japanese-Style Room with Private Open-Air Bath. The Fujimidai Japanese-style tatami room gets in-room dining only when booked on a plan that guarantees it. Fujimidai also has Shoho, a semi-private partial dining area for parties of 2.

Apply at the front desk on the day of your stay.
