Winter Okinawa
Winter Okinawa With Kids: Hotels With Indoor and Heated Pools, November to March
When the sea is closed to swimmers, choose a hotel with water play and a big bath indoors. We use verified facility data to show which pools run year-round and which are seasonal
6 areas · 536 hotels (total listings across these areas)
Once a family decides to visit Okinawa in winter, the first thing most of them get stuck on is this: if you cannot swim in the sea, what will the children actually do? Okinawa's beaches have an official swimming season, and outside of it, in winter, the beach becomes a place for views and walks. That is why choosing a hotel in this season comes down to whether there is an indoor pool, a heated pool, or a big bath inside the building, well before location or views. Miss that, and you have nowhere to go on a rainy or windy day.
As for how the season feels: November is often still warm enough to move around in light clothing during the day, and it overlaps with the end of the outdoor pool season. From December through February there are many windy days, so playing in water outdoors is not realistic, and facilities that work entirely indoors become what you rely on. In March some hotels start opening their outdoor pools, but the early part of the month is still chilly, and whether the water is heated makes a big difference to how it feels. If you plan on long sleeves plus a layer over the top for the whole trip, packing gets easier.
Hotels whose indoor pools run year-round are clustered on the west coast, in Onna Village and Nago. With a heated pool where the water temperature is controlled, even a windy midwinter day will not derail your plans.
The central and southern areas that are easy to reach from Naha, and Motobu Town near Churaumi Aquarium, also have hotels where water play is fully covered indoors. Which areas have which facilities is broken down area by area below.
Loaner items are limited in number, and pool opening periods and age or height requirements differ from hotel to hotel. For any hotel you are interested in, check the verified amenities on its hotel page, then confirm against the latest information on the official website and booking sites.
Features to look for in this collection
On the west coast, pick Onna and Nago for year-round indoor pools
Even when a hotel lists an indoor pool, some close it in winter and some run it all year. Onna Village and Nago are where the latter are concentrated, and with a heated pool where the water temperature is controlled, children can play from December through February without getting chilled. The Busena Terrace's indoor pool is open year-round and has a separate children's pool alongside it. Many hotels switch their outdoor pools to seasonal operation, so confirming before you book whether it will be running on your dates keeps your plans intact.

Use Naha, the south, and the central coast as a sightseeing base and keep water play indoors
For nights when you are touring the indoor play spots around Naha and the south, Itoman, Chatan, Ginowan, and Nanjo are easy to work with. The indoor heated pool at DoubleTree by Hilton Okinawa Chatan Resort and the indoor pool at Southern Beach Hotel & Resort Okinawa are open year-round, and the year-round heated pool at Yuinchi Hotel Nanjo has a shallow lane for children. The shallow pool at The Beach Tower Okinawa closes from November to mid-March, so in winter you will do better to build your stay around the natural hot spring next door.

Okinawa's Main Island
Hotels in Itoman, Chatan, Ginowan, and Nanjo are well placed for combining with winter sightseeing based out of Naha
In the north, stay near Churaumi Aquarium and pair the two
Churaumi Aquarium is the winter destination in Okinawa least affected by the weather, and staying nearby lets you go in during the quiet stretch right after opening. Orion Hotel Motobu Resort & Spa is a 7-minute walk from the aquarium, every room is over 50 square meters, and the indoor pool has a kids' pool 30 cm deep. How to spend your time around the aquarium is covered in more detail in our Churaumi with kids collection.

Okinawa's Main Island
Hotels in Motobu Town have kids' playrooms and rooms with low beds, which suits a stay built around the aquarium
For New Year, winter break, and spring break, pick dates that dodge the crowds
In winter, Okinawa's peaks in price and crowding come at New Year and spring break, and the same hotel is far quieter just before or after. If you have to travel during school holidays, simply shifting toward the start or the end rather than the very middle changes how busy the hotel pool feels. For help building your dates, see our New Year family travel collection, our spring break travel with kids collection, and our article on how to spend the New Year holidays.

Okinawa's Main Island
In busy periods, Japanese-style rooms and family rooms fill up first, so deciding on a room type before you search makes choosing easier
For a winter stay on the outer islands, choose a hotel with a heated pool
Miyakojima and Ishigaki are also outside the swimming season in winter, so, just as on the main island, you choose a hotel based on whether water play is possible indoors. Hotels with indoor or heated pools can be filtered from the area pages, so deciding on your requirements first makes the choice quicker.

Ishigaki Island

Tips for traveling with kids
- checkLong sleeves plus a layer over the top is the baseline, and adding one thin windbreaker for windy days makes getting around along the coast much easier
- checkAlways pack swimsuits and sandals, so you can head straight in at a hotel with an indoor pool. For the finer details, see our Okinawa packing list for families with kids
- checkOn rainy or windy days, building the day around what the hotel offers indoors holds up best, and our article on hotel play spaces for rainy days is a useful reference
- checkEven a year-round indoor pool may not have a children's pool, so checking the water depth and any height or age requirements before you book saves trouble on the day
- checkChoosing a hotel with a big communal bath or hot spring so children do not get chilled after the pool makes the run-up to bedtime easier to manage
- checkLoaner cribs and strollers are limited in number and restricted to certain ages in months, so contacting the hotel as soon as your booking is confirmed is the sure way to secure them

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you swim in the sea in Okinawa in winter?
expand_more
Beaches have an official swimming season, and winter falls outside it, so it is safer not to plan on swimming. Walks on the sand and shell collecting are still enjoyable, but if you want water play, the answer is to choose a hotel with an indoor or heated pool. Year-round facilities, such as the indoor heated atrium pool at The Moon Beach Museum Resort, are what you rely on.
Aren't the pools in Okinawa cold in December?
expand_more
Most hotels run their outdoor pools seasonally, and in winter they are either closed or too chilly to be realistic. Even indoors, whether the water is heated changes how it feels: the indoor pool at Kanucha Bay Hotel & Villas is kept at about 30 degrees Celsius, DoubleTree by Hilton Okinawa Chatan Resort has a 17-meter indoor heated pool open year-round, and the heated pool at Yuinchi Hotel Nanjo is also open every day of the year.
When should we book for the New Year holidays in Okinawa?
expand_more
Japanese-style rooms and family rooms that sleep larger groups go first, so the rule is to lock in your stay as soon as your dates are set. The New Year period is a peak for both price and crowding, so if you can take dates toward the first or last day of the holiday, more room choices tend to remain.
Is winter Okinawa easy to visit with a baby?
expand_more
There are hotels that make it easy. Kanucha Bay Hotel & Villas offers Welcome Baby certified rooms, a Japanese baby-friendly certification, along with a toddler set that brings together a temperature-adjustable kettle, bath toys, a baby bath, and a lidded diaper bin. Sheraton Okinawa Sunmarina Resort lends cribs, baby baths, and warming kettles for preparing formula free of charge, and also accommodates bringing in and reheating baby food.
Are there pools or baths that children who are not yet potty trained can use?
expand_more
Yes. Orion Hotel Motobu Resort & Spa has kids' pools 30 cm deep both outdoors and indoors, which children can use with a swim diaper under their swimsuit, and children who are not yet potty trained can also use the hot spring. Sheraton Okinawa Sunmarina Resort provides baby baths in the communal bath area for children who are not yet potty trained.
