Overview

Yugawara Onsen Kaiseki Ryoan Ashikari is a 17-room ryokan built in the sukiya style (a refined traditional Japanese architectural style), set in the hills of Yugawara, and every room has its own open-air bath with onsen water flowing straight from the source. It is certified as a Welcome Baby hotel by MIKI HOUSE Kosodate Soken, and baby items such as a Bumbo sofa, a formula-preparation kettle and futons for naps are available to borrow free of charge. There are kids' food and baby food menus, and you can also choose plans with in-room dining. There is no elevator, and some rooms involve going up and down stairs.

Rooms

All 17 rooms have their own open-air bath with onsen water flowing straight from the source, and most rooms are Japanese-Western rooms. The large Japanese-Western rooms Katsuragi and Sagamiji are 100 sq m and sleep up to 6 guests, while Hagi, Awayuki and Kumoi are 80 sq m. Among the detached Japanese-Western rooms, Kokonoe is 70 sq m and Hatsuse is 60 sq m, and the Japanese-style tatami room Kyo is 60 sq m. The 45 sq m Japanese-Western rooms (either Izayoi or Tamaginu) have two beds, each 120 cm wide and 60 cm high. According to the room guide on the ryokan's website, Kokonoe sleeps 4, Hatsuse and Kyo sleep 3, and the 45 sq m Japanese-Western rooms sleep 2. On Rakuten Travel plans, however, Kokonoe can be booked for up to 5 guests, Hatsuse and Kyo for up to 4, and the 45 sq m Japanese-Western rooms for up to 3. The rooms have a humidifying air purifier. There is no elevator, so getting around means using the stairs. Reaching the annex rooms with an open-air bath (Kaguyama, Ouka, Hagi, Kyo and Takamado) involves about 40 outdoor steps, and reaching the detached rooms Kokonoe and Hatsuse about 20, so strollers need to be carried. The communal baths and the dining area are on the entrance floor, so you will go up and down the stairs each time you use them. There are no barrier-free facilities.

Dining

On plans with meals in the dining area, dinner is a 10-dish kaiseki meal served from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the dining room Noniwa, and breakfast is a Japanese breakfast from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. In-room dining can be chosen on dedicated plans such as the Authentic Kaiseki In-Room Dining Plan. Awayuki and Kumoi are rooms that can also accommodate in-room dining. The kids' food menu includes a kids' meal, chawanmushi (savory egg custard), simmered udon, dashimaki tamago (rolled omelet), fried chicken, Hamburg steak, omurice (omelet rice) and fried shrimp, and the dishes change with the season. The baby food menu includes tofu and vegetables in a thickened sauce, grilled white fish and white fish simmered in dashi broth. Dietary restrictions such as allergies, as well as dishes for young children, are accommodated as far as possible if you discuss them when booking. On the dining-area plans, allergenic ingredients must be notified in advance, and same-day requests cannot be accommodated.

Baths and Onsen

The in-room open-air baths are fed with onsen water straight from the source, so you can bathe with just your children and family. There are also two open-air communal baths, Takane and Kusamakura, which alternate between men and women and are open from 3 p.m. to midnight and from 12:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. The ryokan notes that the communal baths use recirculated water. There is no private-hire bath and no sauna. Whether children who are not yet out of diapers may enter the communal bath tubs is not stated, so please check in advance.

Family-Friendly Features

The ryokan is certified as a Welcome Baby hotel by MIKI HOUSE Kosodate Soken. The building is spaciously laid out, and the ryokan says there is no need to worry about your baby's crying being heard next door. Baby items including a Bumbo sofa, tableware, baby shampoo, baby soap, a formula-preparation kettle (limited quantity) and a futon for naps (limited quantity) are available to borrow free of charge. Baby equipment also includes a children's toilet-training seat, a bedwetting mat (waterproof sheet), a bed guard, an air purifier and a crib, and the front desk keeps a thermometer and cooling gel sheets. The Welcome Baby Plan, for families with children only, includes in-room dinner and breakfast, and you need to note the number and ages of your children in the comments when booking. As benefits of this plan, a baby chair, a kids' chair, children's tableware, a formula-preparation kettle and a simple nap futon for babies are lent free of charge, and a diaper bin is provided. On the same plan, regular futon bedding costs extra, and cancellation is free until the day before. Rakuten Travel's facility information states that co-sleeping babies stay free on the in-room dining plan for families with babies. On Ikyu.com's Authentic Kaiseki Standard Plan (meals in the dining area), elementary school children cannot stay, and babies and toddlers can only co-sleep without bedding, at 8,800 yen with meals or 2,200 yen without meals, with co-sleeping for up to 2 children. Children's rates and acceptance conditions differ by plan, so please confirm before booking. A bathing tax of 150 yen and an accommodation tax of 300 to 500 yen are charged separately. There is no childcare service.
