Yajima Pension Starship - known locally as yazipen, or Yajipen - is a long-established pension founded in 1974 (Showa 49) in Haramura, Nagano, on the western foot of the Yatsugatake mountains. It is a small, family-run inn, and the owner family, who have three children and ten grandchildren, welcome visitors the way they would welcome their own family. The air in Haramura is clear enough that it is called "the village where the stars fall," and one of the great pleasures here is looking up at a sky full of stars from the wide courtyard.
Facilities
The grounds hold four buildings: the main building, a log house, cottages and a log bathhouse. The main building is the original two-story building from the pension's founding, with a lounge warmed by a wood stove, a dining area and 8 guest rooms. On the second floor of the dining area there is a small kids' space with toys and games where children can settle in. Rooms in the main building sleep up to 3 guests each, or up to 6 in a connecting room made by joining two rooms.
Rooms
The log house has Room 401 for 3 guests and Room 402, which has a loft, for 5 guests; each room comes with a toilet, a shower room, a washbasin and a refrigerator. It suits two families traveling together, or a two-generation trip with both rooms booked. For bathing, the log bathhouse holds the Ryujin Bath, a private-hire family bath reserved in 30-minute slots in check-in order; in the morning no reservation is needed and you can bathe whenever it is free. There is a bath in the main building as well. Because you have the bath to yourselves, families with a baby who cries at night can use it without feeling self-conscious.
Dining
Stays basically include one night with two meals, and as a rule there are no room-only plans. Guests speak highly of the homemade dinners, generous with vegetables from the local Yatsugatake area, and of the breakfast bread baked in-house with wheat grown in Nagano Prefecture. The cook is certified as a vegetable sommelier and a rice-flour meister, and if you cannot eat wheat, butter or eggs, they can substitute rice-flour bread and similar alternatives. Pets cannot be brought along. There is no onsen or pool on the property. If your child has allergies, the pension asks that you always get in touch in advance.
