An exclusive-use machiya beside the Miyagawa River, limited to 1 group per day. It has 111 sq m, 2 bedrooms with 1 king bed and 3 futon bedding sets, 2 bathrooms and 2 toilets, and accommodates up to 4 guests. Self-catering is possible in the kitchen with an induction cooktop and cooking utensils. Families and groups can experience machiya living in a private room type without worrying about other guests.

The main building has 2 types of private-hire bath: a bright hinoki bath surrounded by Hida-grown hinoki and overlooking a courtyard garden, and a cave-like bath. Both have spacious tubs with hinoki-scented hinoki balls floating in the water. They can be reserved for family use separately from the guest-room bathrooms. These are heated baths, not onsen.

THE MACHIYA HOTEL TAKAYAMA is a designer machiya hotel created by renovating a traditional townhouse close to Takayama's old townscape and Takayama Station. Traditional machiya features such as distinctive pillars have been preserved alongside modern design, while facilities including the bathrooms have been renewed. It is one of the properties in the MACHIYA INNS & HOTELS group, which has locations in Kyoto, Kanazawa and Takayama.

One is a bright hinoki bath surrounded by Hida-grown hinoki and overlooking greenery in a courtyard garden; the other has a cave-like atmosphere inspired by the Hida Great Limestone Cave. Hinoki-scented hinoki balls float in the tubs. Use is by reservation for 1 group for 60 minutes, at a fee of 2,000 yen per person, including tax. Amenities and beauty appliances from the Gifu cosmetics brand meet tree are also available. Children under school age cannot use the private-hire baths. These are heated baths, not onsen.

■Access and services Takayama Station and the old townscape are within walking distance, as are Takayama Jinya, Nakabashi Bridge and Miyagawa Morning Market. Buses also make it convenient to travel to Shirakawa-go and Kamikochi. Free luggage storage is available before check-in and after checkout, and there is a laundry room. The entire property is non-smoking, and pets are not allowed.
