Sukayu Onsen Ryokan is a lone inn set high on the western foot of the Hakkoda mountains, at an elevation of about 900 m, in the first area ever designated a National Health Resort Onsen. Its signature is Hiba Sennin Buro, a 160-tatami-mat mixed-bathing communal bath fed by four spring sources, among them Shibu-Rokubu no Yu and Netsu no Yu. There is also Tama no Yu, a smaller bath separated for men and women, and the mixed bath sets aside women-only hours. Of the 139 rooms in total, there are Western-style rooms and Japanese-style tatami rooms, plus a toji (therapeutic-stay) wing where guests can cook for themselves, and several plans have set children's rates.
Rooms
There are 139 rooms in all, answering a wide range of stays. Building 1, renovated in 2019, has Western-style rooms with beds, while the two-story wooden I Building and Building 7 have characterful Japanese-style tatami rooms of 6 to 8 tatami mats with an engawa veranda and a tokonoma alcove. Only 7 rooms in Building 1 of the ryokan wing and 24 rooms in Building 3 of the toji wing have a toilet and washbasin; guests in all other rooms use shared washrooms and toilets. Building 1 Type A is a 16 sq m twin with two single beds for 1 to 2 guests, and the 28 sq m twin has two semi-double beds, with a simple extra bed added for a third guest, so it takes 1 to 3 guests. The 8-tatami Japanese-style tatami rooms with a toilet in the toji wing take 1 to 4 guests, and in-room hot water and tea, as well as laying out and putting away the futons, are self-service. Some rooms in the I Building use high-quality Yokozuna mattresses. Guests who find stairs difficult, or who would like a room close to a toilet, are asked to mention this when booking.
Dining
Dinner centers on a Japanese kaiseki set meal featuring seafood from Aomori and the bounty of Mount Hakkoda, and on some plans you can choose in-room dining or dinner in a private small banquet room. Breakfast is a buffet in the dining hall, made up of dishes that are gentle on the body. Guests staying in the toji wing can also have smaller toji meals that change daily. Meals accommodating allergies can be arranged, and the photo gallery includes an image of a dinner for preschool-age children. At the soba restaurant Kimen-an you can try the celebrated Sukayu soba, made from buckwheat flour alone with no binder.
Baths and Onsen
The celebrated communal bath Hiba Sennin Buro covers 160 tatami mats and is a mixed-bathing bath with four different spring sources - Netsu no Yu, Hiya no Yu, Shibu-Rokubu no Yu and Yudaki - with men and women separated by a partition. For those uneasy about mixed bathing, women-only bathing hours are set aside every day from 8 to 9 in the morning and from 8 to 9 in the evening, and the smaller Tama no Yu, always separated for men and women, can be used at any time. Since May 2024, rental bathing wear has also been available for both men and women for a fee, which helps when going in together with a child. The water is an acidic, sulfur-containing spring; its listed benefits include helping frail children, while people with sensitive skin or mucous membranes are urged to take care.
Family-Friendly Features
The accommodation plans have set children's rates, so the pricing assumes families will stay. Sightings of Asiatic black bears are sometimes reported in the Hakkoda area, and along with alerting hikers the ryokan lends out bear-repellent spray, so checking the latest information is recommended before walking outdoors with children.
Access
This lone inn sits among the mountains about 30 kilometers south of central Aomori city, about 70 minutes from Aomori Station on the JR bus bound for Lake Towada. Staying guests can also use a free shuttle bus, which requires a reservation and takes about 60 minutes, and there are 150 free parking spaces on a first-come, first-served basis. In winter the snow can exceed 5 meters, and as a rule the roads are not cleared after 5 p.m., so arriving before then is recommended. Check-in is from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., and checkout is at 10 a.m.
