forumWhat families say

Rakuten Travel rating 4.61 out of 5 (1,202 reviews). Guests report that breakfast offers a wide variety of dishes with a good selection of desserts, and that their children enjoyed it. Some reviews also note that the water in the communal bath is not too hot, making it easy for children to get in. On the other hand, some guests were disappointed that the dinner buffet had a somewhat limited selection and no soft drinks.

Overview

The Shiroyama Terrace Tsuyama Bettei is a 65-room hotel in the center of Tsuyama, with a communal bath at the view onsen Dodo Onsen looking out over the ruins of Tsuyama Castle. Children who have not yet started elementary school stay free when co-sleeping, and the breakfast buffet is free for them as well, in both cases up to the number of accompanying adults. Children's items such as a bouncer and a baby bath are available to borrow. At dinner, families can choose a kids' kaiseki or a kids' meal, and a baby lunch can be added. A free shuttle runs from JR Tsuyama Station, and the hotel is about 10 minutes by car from the Tsuyama IC.

Rooms

The hotel has 65 rooms in 11 types, so you can choose one to suit your group. On the Regular floor there are the Moderate Double (19 sq m, for 1-2 guests) and the Moderate Twin (25 sq m, for 1-2 guests), and there are also 10-mat Japanese-style tatami rooms (36 sq m, for 1-4 guests). For groups of 3 or more, many rooms combine a hide-a-bed (sofa bed), an extra bed and Japanese futon bedding. Some of the Moderate Twin rooms with a terrace can also be used as connecting rooms, with the terrace linking the two.

Dining

Dinner is a kaiseki course (a multi-course Japanese meal) at Chef's Dining Sakura on the 7th floor. Elementary school children are served a kids' kaiseki and preschool-age children a kids' meal, and a baby lunch (1,980 yen) can be added from the extra menu. There are also private rooms and Japanese-style tatami seating, used for occasions such as business meetings and betrothal ceremonies, where you can eat without worrying about other guests. Breakfast is a Japanese-Western buffet at the local-produce dining restaurant Mimasaka Kitchen on the 1st floor, and it is free for children who have not yet started elementary school, up to the number of accompanying adults. Food allergies are accommodated as far as possible if you tell the hotel the ingredients in advance; requests cannot be handled on the day itself.

Baths and onsen

On the 8th floor, Tsuyama Onsen Shiromi SPA lets you bathe while looking out at the ruins of Tsuyama Castle, in tubs brimming with Dodo Onsen water, long loved as a spring that is good for the skin. Along with an indoor bath, sauna and cold bath, there are jet baths and a reclining-bath area. A room card key is required to enter. Guest rooms on the special Yuro floor have a terrace with an open-air bath fed by this same Dodo Onsen water, and on the dog-friendly floor, 5 of the 23 rooms also have an open-air bath. If you would like to soak as a family without worrying about other guests, choosing one of these rooms is one way to do it.

Family-friendly features

When children under school age stay by co-sleeping, no accommodation charge applies for them, up to the number of adults. Guests pay a bathing tax of 150 yen per person, but children who stay free by co-sleeping are not charged the bathing tax either. Each room has an electric kettle you can use for hot water for formula, and formula-preparation devices are also available to borrow, though in limited numbers. Washing and sterilizing baby bottles is generally something guests do themselves with their own supplies, but if you bring a container that can be sterilized in a microwave, staff can help. Yukata are provided in the rooms in medium size, and you can request a different size at the front desk. The 5 Japanese-Western Room A units with a private open-air bath terrace on the special Yuro floor and the 1 Corner Twin with a terrace on the Sankyu comfort floor are designed with barrier-free features, such as a ramp at the entrance step, but please note that the shower booths have a step. Wheelchairs are available to borrow at the front desk; numbers are limited, so reserving early is recommended.

The hotel is about a 10-minute walk from JR Tsuyama Station, and a free shuttle bus carrying up to 9 passengers is available with advance reservation, which eases the journey when you are traveling with young children and plenty of luggage.
