forumWhat families say

Rakuten Travel rating 4.6 out of 5 (3,789 reviews). In reviews from families, guests report that their children were thrilled by the theater-style buffet, with sushi shaped in front of them and all-you-can-eat crab. Some also mention that the free drink dispenser and sweets at the entrance kept children happy during the wait, and that the dinosaur room went over well with the family. One point to note is that checkout is at 10 a.m., which guests say is a little early for a leisurely morning bath.

Kids Facilities

Items available to borrow for children

Indoor
  • paymentsPrice:Free for guests

A diaper bin, baby and children's hangers, a baby quilt, a microwave baby-bottle sterilizer, a toilet-training seat, a bath chair, and a range of table games and card games are available to borrow. Quantities are limited. There are no children's mattress futons; children sleep on the same size futon as adults (an extra set is 1,100 yen). Cribs, bed guards, baby baths and strollers are not available. Humidifiers and air purifiers can also be borrowed.

Children's equipment in the restaurant

Indoor

The restaurant has children's chairs, baby racks and children's tableware. The baby racks and children's chairs are limited in number. You can bring a stroller into the restaurant, but strollers are not available to borrow, and bibs are not provided. Baby food you bring with you can be warmed in the microwave in the lobby, or ask the staff if you would like it warmed at the restaurant. Bringing food or drink into the dining venues is not permitted at all; the only exception is baby food for children aged 0 to 1.

Children's meals

Indoor

On the kaiseki plans (the Jusan no Kaze kaiseki and the Echizen crab kaiseki can be chosen only by guests staying in Roan, Jusan no Kaze or the Honjin Japanese-Western rooms), elementary school children are served dishes based on the adult menu, and children aged 3 to 6 who have not yet started elementary school are served a children's set meal. For children aged 1 to 2, extra dishes can be ordered separately: a children's set meal at 2,200 yen, an omurice set at 1,200 yen, a stewed Hamburg steak at 880 yen and more. At the buffet, children of every age eat the same food as the adults.

Tatami private-hire baths Shirasagi and Sekirei

Indoor

There are 2 tatami-floored private-hire baths, at 2,500 yen for 45 minutes including tax, with reservations required. The tatami washing areas are soft to the touch, so sitting straight down on the floor is not uncomfortable, and the water temperature is measured daily and stays in the 40 to 41 degrees Celsius range. Shirasagi has a baby bed. For children aged 7 and over, who cannot enter the bath of the opposite sex, the ryokan suggests using a private-hire bath.

Baby facilities in the communal baths

Indoor

There are baby beds in the changing rooms of the men's and women's communal baths and of the private-hire baths, and bath chairs and baby soap in the men's and women's communal baths and in Komorebi no Yu. There is no age restriction on bathing and children can use the baths from age 0, but children aged 7 and over cannot enter the bath of the opposite sex. There is no nursing room.

Honjin dinosaur room

Indoor

A Japanese-Western room with 2 beds in a tatami room, with dinosaur touches all around. It sleeps 2 to 4 guests, and children aged 3 and over count toward that number. For parties of 3 to 4, Japanese futon bedding is used alongside the beds. There are only 2 of these rooms, and if you book both, they will be on different floors.

Overview

Awara Onsen Seifuso is a large ryokan in Awara Onsen with one of the largest garden open-air baths in the Hokuriku region. The guest rooms are mainly Japanese-style tatami rooms and Japanese-Western rooms, all finished in tatami, and family options include a dinosaur room and the Gyoen Japanese-Western room for up to 8 guests. Dinner can be a theater-style buffet where dishes are finished on the spot, and at the buffet children of every age eat the same food as the adults. The kaiseki course is available only to guests staying in Roan, Jusan no Kaze or the Honjin Japanese-Western rooms, and children aged 3 to 6 who have not yet started elementary school are served a children's set meal. There is no age restriction on the communal baths, so children can bathe from age 0; the changing rooms have baby beds, and the bathing areas have bath chairs and baby soap. Cribs and bed guards are not available to borrow.

Rooms

There are many room types, including Japanese-Western rooms that blend the calm of Japanese design with Western comfort, Japanese-style tatami rooms and Japanese twin rooms. The dinosaur room in the Honjin wing is a Japanese-Western room with a tatami area and 2 beds, sleeping 2 to 4 guests. There are only 2 dinosaur rooms. The Gyoen Japanese-Western room is spacious enough for up to 8 guests, which suits three-generation trips as well. Both types have one room per floor, so if you book two rooms they will be on different floors. Roan, the special room with a semi-open-air bath, is a Japanese-Western room limited to 2 rooms, 63 sq m with 2 double beds, sleeping 2 to 4 guests. Maximum occupancy by room type is 4 guests for the Japanese-style tatami rooms with an open-air bath, the Japanese-style tatami rooms with a semi-open-air bath, the Honjin Japanese-Western rooms, the Gyoen Japanese-style tatami rooms, the dinosaur rooms and Roan; 2 guests for the Honjin Japanese twin; 6 guests for the Japanese-Western rooms with an open-air bath; and 8 guests for the Gyoen Japanese-Western room. Occupancy counts children aged 3 and over, and children aged 1 to 2 can co-sleep beyond the stated capacity, though the room will feel tighter.

Dining

Dinner is the theater-style buffet at Niji, the buffet restaurant on the first floor of the Gyoen wing. The kaiseki courses served in the dining rooms (the Jusan no Kaze kaiseki and, from November to March, the Echizen crab kaiseki) can be chosen only by guests staying in Roan, Jusan no Kaze or the Honjin Japanese-Western rooms. Last entry for the buffet dinner is 7 p.m., with around 90 minutes as a guide for the meal. Seats cannot be reserved and are given in order of arrival; tables seat 4 and the restaurant does not prepare joined tables, so if a party of 5 or more wants to eat together, you are advised to arrive when the restaurant opens. Buffet plans include all-you-can-drink alcohol and soft drinks at dinner and soft drinks at breakfast, with soft drinks such as orange juice, cola, melon soda and Calpis. Private rooms are reserved for guests in the rooms with an open-air bath (Roan and Jusan no Kaze) and are limited in number; the buffet is open seating. Breakfast is a Japanese and Western buffet from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., with last reception at 8:30 a.m. In-room dining is not offered, and all meals are served in the dining rooms or banquet rooms. Allergies can be accommodated only for the kaiseki courses: with advance notice, the ingredients you cannot eat are left out and replaced with other dishes, and requests made on the day cannot be accommodated. The buffet has no allergen labeling.

Baths and Onsen

There is a wide variety of onsen bathing here, including a garden open-air bath, a hinoki cypress bath, a ceramic tub bath and a footbath, and the spring water is a sodium and calcium chloride spring. There is no age restriction on bathing in the communal baths and children can use them from age 0, but because the tubs differ in temperature, parents are asked to check the water before their child gets in. Children aged 7 and over cannot enter the bath of the opposite sex. For children who cannot enter the bath of the opposite sex, the ryokan suggests using a private-hire bath. There are 2 tatami-floored private-hire baths, Shirasagi and Sekirei, at 2,500 yen for 45 minutes, with reservations required. The washing areas are tatami too, so sitting straight down on the floor is neither hard nor cold. The water temperature is measured daily and stays in the 40 to 41 degrees Celsius range.

Family-Friendly Features

Items available to borrow for children include a baby quilt, small hangers, a microwave baby-bottle sterilizer, a toilet-training seat and a diaper bin, all in limited numbers. Baby bottles can also be sterilized for you at the front desk. Humidifiers and air purifiers are available to borrow free of charge as well. Children's samue (a two-piece Japanese work outfit) comes in 3 sizes for heights of 80 cm to 140 cm and can be picked up at the lending corner in the lobby. Amenities for children aged 1 and over include a children's toothbrush and a face towel, while step stools and children's slippers are available to borrow. Games such as playing cards, Jenga and the Game of Life can be borrowed too; numbers are limited, so they cannot be reserved in advance and you ask at the front desk on the day. There are no children's futons: the mattress futons are the same size as the adults', and the only bedding available to borrow is the children's quilt.

Play Areas and Pools

The outdoor pool closed in 2017, and there is no pool on the property. Shibamasa World, 3.1 km away as the crow flies, opens a pool in summer, and during that period a temporary shuttle bus runs from Awara-Yunomachi Station. Inside the ryokan there is a game corner on the second floor of the Honjin wing, with about 16 machines including air hockey and crane games, open from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., along with a table-tennis table, also 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., at 500 yen for 30 minutes. The Hohoho footbath is free and open 24 hours to anyone. You can set off fireworks in the parking area and borrow a bucket, though aerial fireworks are not allowed. Nearby are Mikuni Sunset Beach, a shallow beach popular with families (5.0 km away as the crow flies), and Echizen Matsushima Aquarium (also 5.0 km), which has dolphin shows and penguin walks every day.

Access

It is 15 minutes from JR Awara-Onsen Station, and a pickup bus is available with a reservation. It departs from the bus rotary at the station's west exit at 2:30 p.m., 3 p.m., 4 p.m. and 5 p.m., and from the ryokan the next morning at 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.; you need to get in touch at least one hour before the bus you want to take. JR Awara-Onsen Station has an elevator, while Awara-Yunomachi Station on the Echizen Railway does not. By car it is 20 minutes from Kanazu IC on the Hokuriku Expressway, and parking for about 300 cars is free. You can pull up at the main entrance to drop off your companions and luggage. Check-in is normally from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.; if you will arrive after 6 p.m., please let the ryokan know.
