Pension Abend Club, in the Appi Kogen Pension Village in Hachimantai, Iwate, is a small inn with 7 rooms in all - 4 twin rooms, 2 triple rooms and 1 Japanese-style tatami room of 9 tatami mats - and space for about 10 guests. It stands on a plateau at an elevation of about 550 m, where cool summer breezes work like natural air conditioning, and where underfloor heating throughout the building and a pellet stove soften the cold of snow country in winter.
Time Together Indoors
The first floor is a relaxing space with cork-tile flooring, where LP records play in the background and the scent of home-roasted coffee drifts through. The playroom has a pellet stove and shelves of books - picture books, manga, illustrated encyclopedias, mysteries and classics alike - that you are free to read, so the family can take it easy over a book or a card game. The guest rooms are on the second floor, and the washbasins and toilets are shared, separated for men and women. There is also a self-service tea corner and a shared refrigerator.

Breakfast brings home-roasted coffee and a generous spread of vegetables. Food allergies can also be accommodated if discussed in advance. The family plan has separate rates for children aged 1 to 3, aged 4 to 6 and of elementary school age, and the pension adjusts individually to suit each family.
Access and the Surrounding Area
About 10 minutes by car from the Matsuo-Hachimantai IC on the Tohoku Expressway, or about 15 minutes from the Ashiro IC. If you come by train, there is a free shuttle from Appi Kogen Station on the JR Hanawa Line, taking about 5 minutes, with advance notice required; the shuttle also covers the Appi Pension bus stop, Appi Kogen Ski Resort and the Mount Iwate trailhead. Appi Kogen Ski Resort (December to May) has its slopes close by, and beyond winter skiing and snowboarding there is nature to enjoy through the seasons, from trekking in the beech forest to playing in the mountain streams and fishing for iwana char in summer.
