Nozawa Onsen Ryokan Sakaya is a long-established hot-spring inn at the heart of the Nozawa Onsen hot-spring town, continuing for eighteen generations. Onsen water of 100% purity wells up naturally on the grounds and flows straight through the baths, with the temperature adjusted without adding any water. There are 25 Japanese-style tatami rooms and 4 Japanese-Western rooms; the tatami rooms with an antechamber sleep up to 8 guests and the Japanese-Western rooms up to 5, which suits families. The private-hire bath Matsu no Yu is free to use by reservation, so you can be sure of a bath to share with your children. Meals are served in the dining areas, which include 14 private dining rooms. Co-sleeping is limited to one child, and rates for babies and toddlers differ depending on whether bedding is included.
Rooms
There are 29 rooms in all: 25 Japanese-style tatami rooms and 4 Japanese-Western rooms. The Sakaya standard room is a 10-tatami Japanese-style room plus a broad window-side space, 35-40 sq m, sleeping 2 to 4 guests. The Japanese-style room with an antechamber has a 12.5-tatami main room together with an antechamber and a sunken-floor (horigotatsu) seating area, and sleeps 2 to 8 guests, so a larger family can stay together in one room. The Japanese-Western room pairs a 10-tatami main room with a room holding twin beds, and sleeps 2 to 5 guests. The compact Japanese-style room (8 tatami plus a broad window-side space) and the Japanese-style twin room (a Japanese-Western type with low beds) are 28-32 sq m and sleep 1 to 2 guests; the compact Japanese-style room has a toilet and a shower booth. Because the low beds in the Japanese-style twin room sit close to the floor, young children can climb on and off them on their own. Every Sakaya standard room has a bath and a toilet with a washlet. A humidifier is available to borrow as room equipment, which helps in a child's bedroom during the dry season. Separately from the main building there are 7 independent detached houses, Jumyoen, each a 3LDK layout (three rooms plus a living-dining-kitchen). They come with a full kitchen that makes longer stays possible, though seasonings are not provided. Along with 3 twin bedrooms there is a loft, and the ryokan's own information says up to 8 guests per house when the loft is used, while the plans sold on Rakuten Travel are for 2 to 6 guests. Each house has a washer-dryer. Even when you stay in a detached house, check-in, checkout and meals are handled at the main building, Ryokan Sakaya. The building, including the rooms and the dining areas, is non-smoking.
Dining
Breakfast and dinner are both served in the dining areas; in-room dining is not available. Inside there is the dining room Yukitsubaki along with 14 private dining rooms, so a family who would rather eat without worrying about other guests can use a private dining room. Dinner is creative Shinshu Japanese cuisine built around mountain vegetables, mushrooms and other mountain produce as well as local vegetables, and breakfast is a Japanese meal that makes generous use of local ingredients, including grilled yamame trout and onsen eggs. For breakfast you can choose between onsen rice porridge made with the inn's own spring water and white rice from locally grown Koshihikari. Rakuten Travel's facility information states that meals accommodating allergies can be arranged. If anyone has a food allergy, you need to tell the ryokan directly when you book. A children's menu is not listed, so please confirm with the ryokan.
Baths and Onsen
Natural onsen of 100% purity wells up on the grounds of its own accord and flows straight through the baths, with the temperature adjusted without adding any water. The spring water is an alkaline simple sulfur spring. The communal baths are built in the traditional bathhouse style by temple carpenters: Taka no Yu for men and Tsuki no Yu for women, with the tubs divided by temperature into a hot bath, a warm bath and a waist-deep bath. Since there are warm and waist-deep tubs, children who do not like hot water can pick a tub that suits them. The communal baths and open-air baths are available 24 hours a day, apart from the cleaning period from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The open-air bath Tsukimi no Tani adjoins each of the men's and women's communal baths and has a sauna and a cold-water bath alongside it. The family bath Matsu no Yu, where the family can bathe together, is a private-hire bath (an indoor bath) available by reservation, free of charge. The number of groups per day is limited, and the guidance differs by source: Rakuten Travel says 5 groups a day, while Ikyu.com says 7 groups a day for 45 minutes each. Children's rates are fixed by category: 9,800 yen for elementary school children in both the upper and lower grades, and for babies and toddlers 8,800 yen with meals and bedding, 6,050 yen with bedding but no meals, 2,750 yen with meals but no bedding, and 1,650 yen with neither. Because there is a category with bedding for babies and toddlers, one set of bedding for a young child can be prepared for you. Some plans, however, accept neither elementary school children nor babies and toddlers, so please check the children's rate section of the plan you are booking. There is no childcare service. Declared barrier-free features are a wheelchair available to borrow, Western-style toilets in the guest rooms and handrails in the guest-room toilets. Shogi and go sets are available to borrow free of charge, and table tennis is available in summer only. There is also a coin laundry for a fee, useful for families with plenty of dirty clothes.

Get off at Iiyama Station on the Hokuriku Nagano Shinkansen, take the Nozawa Onsen Liner shuttle bus for 25 minutes, get off at Nozawa Onsen and walk 3 minutes. By car it is about 20 km from the Toyota-Iiyama IC on the Joshinetsu Expressway via National Route 117, and there is parking for 30 cars, free of charge and with no reservation needed. To reach Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort, you ride up on the Yu Road moving walkway about a 5-minute walk from the inn (Rakuten Travel gives it as 5 minutes on foot or 5 minutes by car, with no shuttle). Togari Onsen Ski Resort is 15 minutes by car, so heading out to play in the snow or ski is easy. There is a ski drying room in the building. Check-in is at 3 p.m. (last check-in 7 p.m.), and checkout is at 11 a.m. according to the ryokan's own information (Rakuten Travel gives it as 10 a.m., so please check what the site you book through shows).
