Kaminoyama Onsen Nihon no Yado Koyou is a large ryokan on high ground in Kaminoyama, Yamagata. Its onsen is one of the three types of spring water known in Japan for beautifying the skin, and guests can enjoy it in the eighth-floor panoramic communal bath overlooking the Zao mountain range, the first-floor Benibana bath and a private-hire open-air bath. Rooms range from Japanese-style tatami rooms to rooms with a Simmons bed and their own open-air bath, and children who have not yet started elementary school can stay by co-sleeping. Guest rooms are stocked with items such as diaper disposal bags and baby soap, and the dining venues have reclining baby chairs and other children's items available to borrow.
Rooms
The 18 room types range from Japanese-style tatami rooms to Western-style rooms and rooms with their own open-air bath. The 12-tatami Japanese-style room on the mountain side is 34 sq m for 1-5 guests. Two room types have an adjoining anteroom: a 10-tatami room plus 4.5 tatami (40 sq m) and a 10-tatami room plus 6 tatami (48 sq m), both for 1-7 guests, which suits family stays. The Japanese-modern room, with low beds set on tatami, is 36 sq m for 1-2 guests. The room with a semi-open-air bath (46 sq m) and the sixth-floor room with an open-air bath (60 sq m) both have Simmons beds, and every one of these open-air baths uses onsen water; from the third guest onward, bedding is futon. The Saryo rooms with open-air baths, Asahi (50.19 sq m) and Iide (57.81 sq m), each accommodate 1-5 guests and have an open-air bath designed differently in each room.
Dining
Dinner is a Japanese-style set meal featuring dishes such as Yamagata beef sukiyaki, served from 5:45 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the restaurant or a dining room. Breakfast is a 54-item buffet in the third-floor convention hall, using morning-picked vegetables and other produce from Hyakushoen, a contracted farm in Kaminoyama. For children's rates, junior high school students and older pay the adult rate, children in the upper grades of elementary school (grades 4-6) pay 70 percent, and children in the lower grades (grades 1-3) pay 50 percent and are served a kids' meal. For children aged 2 and over who do not take meals, a facility charge of 1,100 yen including tax applies per child. Allergy accommodation covers only the 8 major allergens — egg, shrimp, crab, buckwheat, milk, peanut, wheat and walnut — and must be declared when booking.
Baths and Onsen
The onsen is a sodium-calcium chloride-sulfate spring, counted among the three types of spring water known in Japan for beautifying the skin, and contains 76 mg of metasilicic acid. The eighth-floor panoramic communal bath has an open-air bath overlooking the Zao mountain range, and men's and women's baths swap: women from 4 a.m. to 1 p.m. and men from 1 p.m. to 1 a.m. The first-floor Benibana bath is a barrel-shaped open-air bath, with women from 1 p.m. to 1 a.m. and men from 4 a.m. to 1 p.m. There are also a cold sauna, which drops to nearly minus 5 degrees Celsius, and a hot sauna, so you can experience that minus-5-degree world together with your children. The private-hire open-air bath is available for a fee: 3,300 yen including tax for up to 4 people for 45 minutes, on a first-come, first-served basis.
