Iya Bijin is a 9-room onsen inn set on a site overlooking the Iya Valley in Miyoshi, Tokushima. Every room has its own open-air bath; there is no communal bath and no private-hire bath, so families bathe together in the bath attached to their room. Meals are served in private irori hearth rooms, where you can enjoy a kaiseki course of regional dishes and the local specialty, Iya soba. Children aged 6 months and older can stay, and there are set rates for co-sleeping and for children. There is no shuttle from the nearest station, so coming by car is the usual way to arrive.
Rooms
All 9 rooms have an open-air bath, and the room types let you choose according to the size of your family. The room with a ceramic open-air bath and the room with a hinoki cypress open-air bath are both 10-tatami Japanese-style tatami rooms for 2 to 6 guests, and the hinoki room also has a massage chair. The special room is made up of a 10-tatami Japanese-style tatami room with a hinoki open-air bath and a 10-tatami Japanese-style tatami room with a ceramic open-air bath, and sleeps 2 to 8 guests. The detached suite is a Japanese-Western room combining a 14-tatami Japanese-style tatami room with an irori hearth and a 12-tatami Western-style room with beds; it sleeps 2 to 8 guests and is also used for stays with children and for anniversaries. Every room has a toilet, and the rooms are non-smoking.
Dining
Meals are served at irori hearths with sunken-floor (horigotatsu) seating, all in private rooms. Because every dining space is a private room, families can eat together without worrying about other guests. Dinner is a kaiseki course of regional cuisine, with dishes you find only in this area, such as sashimi of amego trout, salt-grilled sweetfish and dekomawashi, and the soup course comes with cold zaru soba. Many dishes are made with soba, so please let the inn know in advance if anyone has a buckwheat allergy. Other food allergies can also be accommodated with a different dish if you tell them when booking.
Baths and Onsen
The open-air bath in every room is fed with water from the Iya onsen area, flowing straight from the source, and there is no communal bath. The spring water is a simple sulfur cold mineral spring, said to be beneficial for neuralgia, sensitivity to cold and chronic skin conditions. Because the bath sits right beside the room, getting changed is easy when you are bathing with a small child. In winter, the open-air baths are fitted with roller blinds for protection from the cold.
Family-Friendly Features
Children aged 6 months and older can stay, with a facility use fee of 2,800 yen. Under the accommodation plans, up to 2 children can co-sleep, elementary school children pay 70% of the adult rate, and babies and toddlers have child rates set according to whether meals and bedding are included. At mealtimes, floor cushions are laid throughout the sunken-floor seating at the irori hearth, so even small children can sit comfortably. There is an elevator in the building, which makes it easier to get around by wheelchair, though there are some steps; mention this when you book and the inn will suggest a room that works well for you. Humidifiers and air purifiers are set up in the rooms during winter and are available to borrow free of charge in summer as well. Childcare services are not available.
Access
The nearest station, Oboke Station, is about 10 minutes away by bus or taxi, but the inn does not offer a shuttle service. By car it is about 40 minutes from Ikawa-Ikeda IC. There are 17 parking spaces, free for staying guests and needing no reservation. In winter, when it snows, having studless tires or chains ready gives peace of mind. The famous Kazurabashi vine bridge is a 3-minute drive away.
