Dinner is regional cuisine served around an irori hearth, and the ayu sweetfish grilled over charcoal with salt is a hit with children. Tenjin, the guest room with its own open-air bath, is well liked by families with young children. The whole property is non-smoking, barrier-free support includes wheelchairs available to borrow, and parking for 30 cars is free.
Rooms
Rooms range from standard Japanese-style tatami rooms to Japanese-Western rooms and rooms with a view bath or an open-air bath. The standard Japanese-style tatami room is spacious, sleeps up to 5 and is recommended for families, with a 12-tatami-mat Japanese-style room plus a bath and shower room. The Japanese-Western type has a 6-tatami-mat Japanese-style room, a Western room with twin beds and a shower room; the beds are Simmons wide singles (110 x 203 cm). In March 2024, two new room types were added: a Japanese-Western room with a sauna (sleeps 5, with a 12-tatami-mat Japanese-style room, a Western room, a sauna and a bathroom), and a top-floor Japanese-Western room of 30 sq m with a tub in the style of a goemon-buro, a traditional iron cauldron bath (the water is not onsen water). Both have two Simmons semi-double beds (120 x 203 cm). The Suite Modern Japanese-Western room with a view bath is a 40 sq m corner room with a massage chair. Tenjin, the only room in the hotel with its own open-air bath, has a full open-air bath built from Awa aoishi bluestone and sleeps 2 to 5 guests.
Dining
Dinner is served around a nostalgic irori hearth, featuring seasonal flavors sourced locally. Alongside regional dishes such as dekomawashi, sobagome zosui (buckwheat-grain rice porridge) and Iya soba, the ayu sweetfish grilled over charcoal with salt comes out hot and flaky, to the delight of children. Dinner is served from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. (last seating 7 p.m.) and breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. (last seating 8:30 a.m.), in the dining rooms Komi, Inakatei and Asa. There are no fully private dining rooms, and groups of 10 or more may be seated in a banquet room without an irori hearth. Allergies can be accommodated by substituting other ingredients, so please let the hotel know when booking; a buckwheat allergy in particular requires advance notice.
Baths and Onsen
The Tenku open-air bath is reached by a dedicated cable car. The spring water is a simple sulfur spring, said to help with recovery from fatigue and to be good for the skin, and the bath is open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. In addition to Unkai no Yu for men and Jukai no Yu for women, there is an observation deck with a footbath and a post-bath rest house, Hanbei no Ie. The communal bath on the third floor of the main building (Tengai Ken no Yu for men and Tengai Hana no Yu for women) is likewise open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. The private-hire baths are for staying guests only, for a fee, and are also recommended for families.
