Overview
Sunriver Ooboke is a hot-spring ryokan set on high ground looking down over Ooboke Gorge in Mount Tsurugi Quasi-National Park. Of its 25 rooms, the Japanese-style tatami rooms sleep anywhere from 1 to 6 guests, and those of 9 tatami mats or larger have an en-suite bathroom. Many accommodation plans have child rates, and allergy ingredients can be accommodated if you discuss them at least 3 days before your stay date. There is one communal bath and one open-air bath for each gender, and the strongly alkaline view bath takes in the whole sweep of Koboke Gorge. Guests arriving by train can be picked up at Ooboke Station or Koboke Station.
Rooms
The ryokan has 25 rooms: 8 Western-style, 15 Japanese-style tatami and 2 Japanese-Western. The tatami rooms come in 6-, 7-, 8-, 9-, 10- and 12-tatami-mat sizes and sleep 1 to 6 guests, so you can pick one to match your family. Tatami rooms of 9 mats or larger have an en-suite bathroom; guests in the smaller rooms use the communal onsen bath. The 8-mat tatami room with an open-air bath sleeps 2 to 3 and lets you soak in the room's own onsen open-air bath while looking out over Koboke Gorge, but there is no shower or other washing facility there, so bodies are washed in the communal bath. The Japanese-Western rooms are special rooms with both a tatami area and a Western-style area and sleep 1 to 3 guests, while the single and twin rooms sleep 1 to 2. Dining
Dinner starts at a time of your choosing between 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and you let the ryokan know your preference at check-in. Baths and Onsen
There is one communal bath and one open-air bath for each gender, open from 6 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. The spring water is an alkaline simple onsen, said to be beneficial for bruises, skin conditions and beautiful skin, and the ryokan describes it as leaving you with no need for toner. The view communal bath looks out over Koboke Gorge and the Yoshino River.
Family-Friendly Features
Many accommodation plans have child rates, and allergy ingredients can be accommodated if you discuss them in advance. Choosing the tatami room with an open-air bath lets your family soak in an onsen open-air bath on your own, but since it has no shower for washing, you need to wash in the communal bath beforehand. Inside the ryokan there is a karaoke room (3 p.m. to 9 p.m., 2,000 yen per hour before tax) and table tennis, so there is somewhere to move around between meals and baths. The property is not currently barrier-free throughout, but wheelchairs are available to borrow and there is a barrier-free toilet. The curfew is 10 p.m.
Access
It is a 7-minute taxi ride from Ooboke Station on the JR Dosan Line, and a free shuttle to the station is provided. Guests arriving by train can be picked up at or dropped off at Ooboke Station or Koboke Station between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m.; advance contact is required. From the Ikawa-Ikeda IC on the Tokushima Expressway it is 30 minutes by car.
