Hirugami Onsen Yura no Yado Seifuen is a Japanese-style ryokan in Hirugami Onsen in Achi-mura, Nagano. The main building has 16 Japanese-style tatami rooms of 10 tatami mats and 2 Western-style twin rooms, the annex has 8 Japanese-style tatami rooms of 12 tatami mats, and there are also 2 Japanese-Western rooms and 1 Western-style room with an open-air bath. The main building's 10-tatami rooms add a 4-tatami anteroom and sleep up to 5 guests, and the annex's 12-tatami rooms add a broad window-side space and sleep up to 6, so futons can be laid side by side on the tatami, which works well for families with young children. Among the special rooms with an open-air bath, Room 306 is a Western-style twin of about 58 sq m for 2 guests, with 2 Simmons beds measuring 120 x 210 x 47 cm; Room 307 is about 52 sq m, a Western-style room plus a 6-tatami Japanese-style room, for 4 guests; and Room 308 is about 69 sq m, a Western-style room plus a 10-tatami Japanese-style room, for 6 guests. In Rooms 307 and 308, futons are laid in the Japanese-style room when 3 or more guests stay. Rooms 306 and 307 can be used as connecting rooms, which suits a family that wants to split across two rooms. Every room has a bath and toilet, and each is equipped with an air purifier with a humidifying function. Guest rooms, the dining venues and the public areas are non-smoking; smoking areas are in front of the restaurant on the 2nd floor of the main building and at one spot on each floor of the main building.
Dining
Dinner is a kaiseki course, normally served in a semi-private Japanese-style room on the 2nd floor; when those are full it is served in the restaurant venue or the large banquet hall. There is no in-room dining: breakfast is served in the restaurant and the banquet hall, and dinner in the private rooms and the banquet hall. You can choose a dinner start time of 5:30 p.m., 6 p.m., 6:30 p.m. or 7 p.m., and dinner cannot be served after 7 p.m. Depending on the plan you book, 6:30 p.m. may be the latest start time. Breakfast is a Japanese set meal served from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m., so you need to be seated in the venue by around 8:30 a.m. A breakfast plate for children under school age is available as well. For children's meals, children under school age are served a kids' meal plate (roughly for ages 3 through the lower grades of elementary school), while children paying 70% of the adult rate are served a Western-style plate of children's dishes such as fried prawns, accompanied by several of the adult dishes. Baby food is not prepared here, but you may bring your own, and you can ask the staff if you would like it warmed. For allergies, the kitchen will accommodate egg, dairy products, shrimp, crab, buckwheat and peanut as far as possible; because the same cooking utensils and tableware are used, allergens cannot be removed completely, and wheat, soy, bonito stock, kelp stock and all fish cannot be accommodated. Please speak with the front desk in advance.
Baths and Onsen
The spring water is an alkaline simple sulfur spring with a pH of about 9.7. The communal baths, one for men and one for women, each have an indoor bath, an open-air bath and a seated bath where you can rest your back against a support. The indoor bath and seated bath are open from 11:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. the next morning, and the open-air bath from 11:30 a.m. to midnight; the men's and women's baths are not swapped. There is one private-hire bath with both an indoor bath and an open-air bath, reserved in advance, at 3,300 yen for 45 minutes for staying guests. Time slots are on the hour from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., plus 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. the next morning, and since there is only one, booking early is advisable. Guests with tattoos cannot use the communal bath. Whether children who are not yet out of diapers may enter the tubs in the communal bath is not stated, so please confirm in advance. The sand-and-salt bath, the only one in the prefecture, is open to guests of junior high school age and older, and it is a paid facility that must be reserved in advance.
Family-Friendly Features
The changing room of the private-hire bath has a baby bed, and a baby bath set is provided in the private-hire bath. From June 1, 2025, children's rates are as follows: junior high school students and older pay the adult rate; elementary school children with futon bedding and meals pay 70% of the rate for one adult; and for children under school age it is 60% with futon bedding and meals, 40% with meals but no futon bedding, and 20% with futon bedding but no meals, while children who need neither futon bedding nor meals pay a flat 3,300 yen, with no amenities or towels. Only on the Family Plan, children aged 0 to 3 and under who need neither futon bedding nor meals stay free of charge. On the Family Plan for families with children of elementary school age and younger, co-sleeping is free for children aged 0 to 3. The dinner venue has chairs and tables; if you would prefer floor seating with cushions, say so when you book, as numbers are limited. Checkout is at 10 a.m., but you can extend your room for a fee until 12 p.m. at the latest: 1,100 yen per person per hour in the main building and on the 4th and 5th floors of the annex, and 2,200 yen per person per hour on the 3rd floor of the annex. The property has a multipurpose toilet accessible by wheelchair, fitted for ostomates and equipped with a bench for changing clothes. Two wheelchairs for use inside the building are available to borrow, by advance reservation. Pets cannot stay.
Access
About 10 minutes from Sonohara IC on the Chuo Expressway, or about 10 minutes from Iida-Yamamoto IC via Route 153 and Route 256. Free parking is available for 12 cars in front of the hotel and 20 cars behind it. A free shuttle runs to and from the Hirugami Onsen bus stop and Tenryukyo Station on the JR Iida Line, by advance reservation between 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. for parties of 2 or more (the shuttle may not be available depending on your plan or on conditions at the time). Drop-offs are as a rule a little after 10 a.m. Tenryukyo Station is about 25 minutes away by taxi, and if you come by car between December and March you will need snow tires or chains. About a 5-minute walk away, the Asaichi Hiroba morning market is held every day of the year, from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. in summer and 6:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. in winter. Heavens Sonohara, where there is tube sledding in a kids' area, is about 15 minutes away by private car.
