Ginzan Onsen Ryokan Fujiya is a small ryokan with 8 guest rooms in the heart of Ginzan Onsen. The three-story wooden building was renovated to a design by the architect Kengo Kuma, and it carries the streetscape of a Taisho-era hot-spring town into the present day. Its 5 private-hire onsen baths are available around the clock, for as long as you like whenever one is available, so the family can bathe at their own pace without running into other guests. Children's rates are set in detail by age, but the A-type rooms with a private bath cannot accept children, so please confirm in advance.
Rooms
Fujiya is a small ryokan with 8 guest rooms. Every room faces the Ginzan River, so you can look out over the streets of the hot-spring town from your room. Rooms come in three types: A, B and C. The A type consists of the Western-style S300, the Japanese-Western A200 and the Japanese-style tatami A203, special rooms with a private bath intended for 2 to 3 guests. The B type is a 10-tatami Japanese-style tatami room with a broad window-side space, on the third floor; the window-side space is wider than in the C type, and Taisho-era beams can be seen in the ceiling. The C type is a 10-tatami Japanese-style tatami room with a window-side veranda. The B and C rooms have no bath of their own, so guests use the 5 private-hire onsen baths. Every room has a washbasin and a washlet (bidet) toilet. Because handmade washi paper is used for the wallpaper and the shoji screens, smoking is not permitted inside the building or in the rooms, and a smoking area is provided instead.
Dining
Both dinner and breakfast are in-room dining, served in your guest room. The meals are Japanese kaiseki made with produce from the mountains and sea of Yamagata and the Tohoku region, and the menu changes with the season and with what has been sourced. Groups dine not in their rooms but on the indoor terrace on the first floor. Children's meals differ by age: children who have not yet started elementary school, ages 3 to 6, receive a kids' plate, and elementary school children ages 7 to 12 receive a kids' set meal. For children under 3, a plan without meals can also be chosen. If you have allergies or ingredients you would rather avoid, the menu can be adjusted as far as possible provided you get in touch by 3 days before your stay, though not every request can be accommodated.
Baths and Onsen
There are 5 baths - hiba wood, underground, stone, bamboo and semi-open-air - and every one of them is a private space for private-hire use. You can use whichever bath you like, at any hour of the day or night, for as long as you like whenever one is available. The spring water is a sodium chloride and sulfate spring, and the source temperature is 60.3°C. Water is added only when the air temperature rises sharply, and the water is heated only when the air temperature drops sharply. There is no communal bath, only private-hire baths, so even with small children you can bathe without worrying about other guests.
Family-Friendly Features
Children's rates are set in detail by age and by whether meals and bedding are included. For children under 3, the rates start at 7,700 yen for the facility-use fee only, 8,800 yen with bedding, and 13,200 yen with meals. Co-sleeping is limited to one child per room. Note, however, that the A-type rooms with a private bath (S300, A200 and A203) cannot accept children: co-sleeping children, elementary school children, and babies and toddlers alike are unable to stay in them. Depending on the room, bedding arrangements may also mean that children cannot be accommodated, so the ryokan asks that you call to discuss this in advance. There are no barrier-free facilities and no childcare service. There is no convenience store nearby - the nearest is about 30 minutes away by car - so it is worth bringing diapers and anything else you may need.
Access
The ryokan is about 30 minutes by car (15 km) from Oishida Station, the nearest station, and a shuttle from the station is available with a reservation. By car, take Route 13 from the Higashine IC on the Tohoku-Chuo Expressway and head toward Obanazawa. There is a dedicated parking lot with 10 spaces, free for staying guests. The parking lot sits near the entrance to Ginzan Onsen, about an 8-minute walk from the ryokan; call when you arrive and a staff member will come to meet you, or, if the weather is fine, you can simply walk to the ryokan.
