Baths and Onsen
The onsen flows straight from the source. The spring water is a sulfur-containing sodium chloride and sulfate spring, and the source temperature is 60°C. The tub is rich with the warmth of wood, and it is a smallish bath that 3 to 4 people can use at once. There is one bath for men and one for women, and there is no private-hire bath and no sauna. Because the ryokan takes only a small number of guests it does not usually get crowded, but when it does, guests stagger their bathing times. It can be used from check-in at 3 p.m. until 10 a.m. the next morning. Water is not normally added and the temperature is not normally adjusted; when the water is too hot, tap water is used to cool it. No bath additives or disinfectants are used. Hair dryers can be borrowed at the front desk and are also in the changing room. Day-use bathing for people who are not staying overnight is not available. Access
The ryokan stands in the center of the Ginzan Onsen hot-spring town, handy for strolling streets that carry the romance of the Taisho era. A shuttle from JR Oishida Station runs by reservation, leaving Oishida Station at 3:45 p.m. and leaving the ryokan at 9:45 a.m., with about 30 minutes between the station and the ryokan. To arrange it, add a comment when you book or contact the ryokan by 2 days before your stay. By taxi it is about 30 minutes from Oishida Station, at roughly 7,000 yen one way. Driving into the hot-spring town is sometimes restricted to prevent congestion and accidents; in the winter months from December to the end of March in particular, and on public holidays and long weekends, attendants direct traffic at the Taisho Roman-kan just before the town. If you have a reservation, give the attendant the name of the ryokan and the name the booking is under. From mid-November to early April there is snow on the ground, so studless tires are needed if you are driving. There are two free parking lots, one a 1-minute walk away and the other a 3-minute walk away, and no reservation is needed. Check-in is from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.; if you will be later than 6 p.m., you need to call. Early check-in before 3 p.m. and late checkout after 10 a.m. (keeping your room longer) are not available. Luggage can be left at the front desk both before check-in and after checkout. Stays of more than one night in a row are not available. Because the ryokan is run by a small team, it closes irregularly about 2 days a week. The staff do not speak any language other than Japanese, but there is an English top page, and the booking page the ryokan handles directly carries English information down to the children's rates.
