Honkan Kosekiya stands in the middle of the Ginzan Onsen hot-spring town. Founded in the Taisho era, it is designated a Registered Tangible Cultural Property. Everything you eat and drink during your stay is included in the room rate under an all-inclusive style, and dinner can be enjoyed at two venues in the hot-spring town: Nogawa-tei and Yukemuri Shokudo Shirogane. Guest rooms sleep 2 adults, and up to 2 children can share the room when co-sleeping without their own bedding. Children under school age are served a kids' meal, and the ryokan has two indoor baths, one black and one white.
Rooms
There are three room types: mountain-side Taisho-modern rooms, river-side Taisho-modern rooms, and purely Japanese-style tatami rooms. The mountain-side rooms are 20 sq m Japanese-Western rooms with two semi-double beds, marked by Taisho-romance stained glass and antique-style headboards. The river-side rooms are also 20 sq m Japanese-Western rooms, with two semi-double beds on wood flooring. The purely Japanese-style tatami rooms were built to preserve, as far as possible, the craftsmanship of the artisans who worked on Honkan Kosekiya itself. Every room has a toilet with a washlet seat, and all rooms are non-smoking.
Dining
All food and drink during your stay is included in the room rate under an all-inclusive style. Dinner is served at Nogawa-tei, which offers a course menu made with local ingredients, open from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with last orders at 8 p.m. The menu features dishes such as roast Yamagata black-haired wagyu beef, a local specialty. You are also free to eat at Yukemuri Shokudo Shirogane. Breakfast is served in the first-floor lounge, which has an earthen-floor area and a sunken hearth, as a boxed tray set of regional dishes.
Baths
The ryokan has two indoor baths, named Kuro (black) and Shiro (white). Bathing hours are from 4 a.m. to midnight, and the men's and women's baths swap at 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. There is no open-air bath on the property, but you can use the open-air bath and communal bath at the sister ryokan Ginzanso, a 7-minute walk away, free of charge. The Shiro bath recreates the old layout in which the tub was set in a low spot close to the spring source, so the tub sits at the bottom of a flight of stairs.
Family-Friendly Features
Guest rooms sleep 2 adults, but up to 2 children can share the room when co-sleeping without using bedding. All room types have set children's rates. Meals for children under school age are prepared as kids' meals. The dinner venue Nogawa-tei has about 20 steps at its entrance; there is a handrail but no ramp, so entering is difficult not only in a wheelchair but also with a stroller. Because the tub in the Shiro bath sits in a low spot at the bottom of stairs, watch your footing on the steps when bathing with a small child. The guest rooms and lobby are treated as wheelchair-accessible for barrier-free use, but Nogawa-tei is not included.
Access
The nearest station is JR Oishida Station, about 20 minutes away by car. A free shuttle departs from the station at 11:10 a.m., 1:40 p.m. and 3:45 p.m.; advance reservation is required. A public bus also runs here, and the bus stop is right beside the sister ryokan Ginzanso. Parking is free for 45 cars with no reservation required, but vehicle access into the hot-spring town is restricted, so park at the parking area about 1 km from Taisho Roman-kan and call the ryokan, and they will drive you to the entrance of the hot-spring town.
