Camel Hotel & Glamping Resort is a hotel and glamping resort attached to a golf course in Onjuku, Chiba, about 90 minutes from central Tokyo. Alongside the Suite Villa, the Deluxe Hotel and a Japanese-style tatami room, you can choose from four types of glamping, including dome tents, Airstream trailers and camping tents (seven room types in all). Play areas for children are gathered on the grounds: a playroom, an outdoor kids' park, a mini athletic course and a place to meet ponies. There is also a communal bath with an open-air bath, a carbonated spring bath and a sauna. Cribs and baby futon bedding are not provided.
Rooms
The hotel and villa accommodations come in three types. The Suite Villa is a 101.44 sq m 2LDK unit (two rooms plus a living, dining and kitchen area), made up of a 1LDK section with a kitchen plus a guest room, and sleeps 2 to 5 guests. The Deluxe Hotel occupies the top floor of the clubhouse with 11 rooms in all, in twin, triple, four-bed and Japanese-Western types (the Japanese-Western room has 2 beds plus futon bedding for 5). The Japanese-style tatami room is 27 tatami mats (57 sq m), limited to one room per day and sleeps 1 to 10 guests, but it has no bath or toilet: the toilet is just outside the room, and guests bathe in the communal bath. The resort's booking site also lists a special room with an open-air bath (84 sq m, sleeping 2 to 3 guests, limited to one room per day) and a Royal Suite with a jacuzzi (137 sq m, sleeping 2 to 4 guests). The glamping options are the Grand Dome Sai, the dome tent, the elevated-view dome tent, the dome tent with toilet, the middle dome tent, the Airstream and the camping tents. The three kinds of dome tents are set up with 2 double beds; in these and the Grand Dome Sai, futon bedding is laid out for parties of 3 or more, and if children would take your group over the stated capacity, please discuss it with the resort. The elevated-view dome tent sits 3 m above the ground, so guests who are uneasy with heights and families with small children are directed to the regular dome tents. The middle dome tent is 19 sq m inside with no windows; it comes with a full set of futon bedding and air conditioning, and has no bath or toilet. The Airstream has 2 semi-single beds and 1 double bed, and includes a toilet. The Premium Camping Tent comes with a full set of futon bedding and the Nice & Easy Camping Tent with sleeping bags only; neither has heating or cooling, nor a bath or toilet. Apart from the dome tent with toilet and the Airstream, toilets and washrooms are shared. The Grand Dome Sai is limited to one group per day, sleeps 2 to 14 guests, and comes with a sauna, a cold plunge bath and a pool.
Dining
Where you eat dinner depends on where you stay: Deluxe Hotel guests dine at the barbecue garden, Suite Villa guests have in-room dining, and tent guests eat at their tent site. The menu for young children varies by course. The natural BBQ and the seafood BBQ come with a hamburger set, and the shabu-shabu hotpot course and the Japanese kaiseki (multi-course) courses, Boso Shiosai and Boso Kuroshio, come with a kids' dinner plate. On the Three Cheese & Wine BBQ course, young children are served dishes based on the adult meal. If you are concerned about allergens, you need to consult the resort at least 3 days in advance (5 days if a weekend or public holiday falls in between), and requests cannot always be accommodated. Baby food is not provided, but you may bring your own food for an infant.
Baths and Onsen
The communal bath is an artificial radon onsen with an open-air bath, a carbonated spring bath, an indoor bath, a sauna and a cold plunge bath. Staying guests can use it from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from noon to 11 p.m. Children who are not yet out of diapers may use only the showers in the communal bath and cannot get into the tubs. Guests with tattoos, including fashion tattoos and stick-on tattoos, cannot use the bath.
Family-Friendly Features
Children's yukata, drawing pads, bed guards and playing cards are available to borrow free of charge at the front desk, but cribs and baby futon bedding are not provided. Children's rates apply to elementary school age and under, and junior high school students and older pay the adult rate. For children from age 0 until they start elementary school, the rate depends on whether meals and futon bedding are included, regardless of age. Elementary school children pay 70% of the adult rate, younger children with meals and bedding also pay 70%, and younger children with neither bedding nor meals pay 3,150 yen. The playroom has DVDs, play equipment, heating and cooling, and a nursing room, and is free for guests using the facilities from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. No staff are stationed there, so it is a space for children to use together with a parent. Paid childcare by a licensed childcare worker can also be arranged with advance reservation. Checkout is at 10 a.m., and late checkout until 11 a.m. is available for 2,000 yen.
Play Areas
The outdoor kids' park is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Yosei no Mori, a mini athletic course in the woods, is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and lit up at night. At the Fureai Animal Forest (Pony Park), open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., you can meet the ponies. Garden football and mini basketball run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 300 yen per ball for 30 minutes, and the open lawn area is free from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The 150 m Camel Big Slider (1,000 yen per ride) and the off-road buggy karts (850 m per lap, 1,000 yen) operate on weekends and public holidays only, from 10 a.m. to noon and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. (until 4 p.m. in winter). The single-seat kids' buggy requires riders to be aged 12 or over and at least 130 cm tall; children who do not meet those conditions use a vehicle a parent can ride in with them. Foot golf is available from 3 p.m., and the children's rate is 1,000 yen less than the adult rate. Indoors, three table-tennis tables and billiards are free from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and karaoke is available for a fee on a private-hire basis.
Access
About 35 minutes from Ichihara-Tsurumai IC on the Ken-O Expressway, or about 15 minutes by taxi from Onjuku Station on the Sotobo Line (reservation required). The free station shuttle must be reserved by 6 p.m. the day before and runs four times a day: departing Onjuku Station at 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., and departing the resort at 10:30 a.m. and 11:40 a.m.
