The two private-hire baths known as Sanso no Yu in the Sanso building are free family baths that can be locked from the inside. However, due to construction starting in August 2026, the paid, reservation-based private-hire baths Seki and Zen cannot be used.

Shima Onsen Sekizenkan Kashotei Sansou is an onsen ryokan made up of Kashotei, which sits on high ground in Shima Onsen, and Sanso, a nationally registered tangible cultural property. Stays with children are limited to Kashotei; because Sanso is a wooden building where sound carries, children of elementary school age and younger cannot stay there. Kashotei's standard rooms measure 12.5 tatami mats plus 2 tatami mats and accommodate 1 to 6 guests, with co-sleeping for up to 3 children. Dinner is a seasonal kaiseki course, and elementary school children can switch to a hearty kids' plate. The free private-hire baths, the communal bath and the other onsen baths are open to all staying guests.
Rooms
Stays with children are limited to the rooms in Kashotei. The standard room is a sukiya-style Japanese-style tatami room of 12.5 tatami mats plus 2 tatami mats, set on high ground surrounded by pine woods, and accommodates 1 to 6 guests. It has a separate bath and toilet, with a bathroom that includes a washing area. Co-sleeping is possible for up to 3 children. Sanso, by contrast, is a wooden building where sound carries, so children of elementary school age and younger cannot stay there. Families with children of elementary school age and younger need to book a room in Kashotei.
Dining
Dinner is a seasonal kaiseki course using fresh local vegetables along with ingredients carefully selected from across Japan. For Kashotei's standard rooms, there are plans where the meal is served in a designated dining area, as well as plans with in-room dining for up to 6 guests. Elementary school children are served the same kaiseki course as adults, but on request this can be changed to a hearty kids' plate. Children under school age are served a hearty kids' plate. Guests with food allergies must notify the ryokan at least 3 days before the date of the stay; the ryokan cannot accommodate severe allergy symptoms and does not change its stocks or seasonings. An okuizome celebration meal for a baby's 100th-day milestone is also available for 5,500 yen; because the serving vessels are limited in number, it must be reserved by 3 p.m. 5 days in advance.
Baths and Onsen
Staying guests can use all of the onsen baths in the Main Building, Sanso and Kashotei. The two Sanso no Yu baths in Sanso are free private-hire baths that can be locked from the inside, so families can bathe together at their own pace. Please note that from August 2026, construction of a new open-air communal bath begins in the Kashotei courtyard area, and the paid, reservation-based private-hire baths Seki and Zen are being demolished and cannot be used. During the construction period, Kashotei's communal bath Mori no Yu also opens from 3 p.m. instead of its usual time.

Children aged 3 and over are charged a facility fee of 2,750 yen even when they do not have meals or use futon bedding. Children under 3 stay free of charge if they do not need meals or futon bedding. Infants and young children staying with meals and bedding are charged 50% of the adult rate, and elementary school children 70%. Children's yukata, haori jackets and slippers are provided in the rooms, and Sekizenkan prepares children's amenities so that families can stay with peace of mind.
Access
By car, it is about 60 minutes from the Shibukawa-Ikaho IC or the Tsukiyono IC on the Kan-Etsu Expressway. By train, it is 40 minutes by bus or 25 minutes by taxi from JR Nakanojo Station. There is parking for 50 cars, free for staying guests and with no reservation required. Note that the parking for Kashotei and Sanso is in a different location from the Main Building's parking.
