Ryokan Kurashiki is an 8-room ryokan known for its cuisine, standing at the foot of Nakabashi bridge over the Kurashiki River in the heart of the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter. It was founded in 1957 in the restored main house and storehouses of a late-Edo-period sugar wholesaler, and every room has its own character. Only three rooms - Kura no Ma, Nishi no Ma and Yu no Ma - are listed as rooms where children can stay, so confirming before you book is essential. There is no onsen and no communal bath; bathing is in the semi-open-air private-hire bath Hanare-yu, free for 50 minutes per group, or in your room's own bath. Dinner is a kaiseki meal served in the restaurant overlooking the garden.
Rooms
The eight rooms each have their own character, and some are conversions of the merchant house and storehouses built for a sugar wholesaler in the Edo period. Of the three rooms listed as available for children, Nishi no Ma sits on the second floor of the former sugar wholesaler's building, which is more than 170 years old; at 46.7 sq m it has an 8-tatami Japanese-style room, a Western-style bedroom, a bath and a toilet, and sleeps 1 to 4 guests. Kura no Ma is a maisonette conversion of a tool storehouse more than 300 years old, measuring 64.9 sq m, with sunken-floor (horigotatsu) seating in the Japanese-style tatami room and a single 180 cm-wide king bed in the Western-style bedroom; it sleeps 1 to 2 guests. Yu no Ma is a 33.3 sq m room with 10.5 tatami mats and no bed - you sleep on two sets of futon bedding measuring 120 cm wide by 195 cm long - and it sleeps 1 to 2 guests. The largest room in the ryokan, Okuzashiki, is 81.5 sq m and has a kitchen in the earthen-floored area, an 8-tatami Japanese-style room, and a Western-style bedroom adjoining a shower room and toilet. A separate building three minutes away on foot holds two whole-house rentals, each taken by one group at a time: Omoya (80.6 sq m, sleeping 1 to 4 guests) and Hanare (37.1 sq m, sleeping 1 to 2 guests), both with a kitchen equipped with an induction cooktop, a convection microwave oven and cooking utensils.
Before Booking With Children
Only three rooms - Kura no Ma, Nishi no Ma and Yu no Ma - are listed as rooms where children can stay. On plans that include kaiseki, children in the upper grades of elementary school pay 70% of the adult rate and those in the lower grades pay 50%; babies and toddlers with meals and bedding pay 50%, and with no meals and no bedding the rate is 3,450 yen. Bookings with bedding but no meals, or with meals but no bedding, are not accepted. Co-sleeping is limited to one child. On the room-only plans for the whole-house rentals, both elementary school children and younger children pay the full adult rate, and only babies and toddlers taking neither meals nor bedding stay free of charge. Room amenities include a refrigerator, a kettle, a humidifier and individually controlled air conditioning. Kura no Ma also has a convection microwave oven and a toaster, while a microwave and a mini kitchen are found only in some rooms, and both must be reserved in advance. Room service is available from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. There is no communal bath, no pool and no babysitting service.

Bathing hours are 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., and within those hours each group has 50 minutes. Guest rooms have their own baths as well: Nishi no Ma and Yu no Ma both come with a bath and a toilet, and the tubs in Yu no Ma and Okuzashiki are made of koyamaki (Japanese umbrella pine).
Dining
Dinner is a kaiseki meal in the restaurant facing the Yozen no Niwa garden, with a start time you choose between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. On some plans it is served as in-room dining in Nishi no Ma or Yu no Ma - the same two rooms that are listed as available for children. You can discuss dislikes and allergies, and meals prepared with allergies in mind can be accommodated. Breakfast is served in the same restaurant, with a start time you choose between 7:30 a.m. and 9 a.m., and a Western breakfast can be prepared if you let the ryokan know in advance. There is also the Kurashiki Local Dining Experience, where dinner from the second night onward is taken at a nearby restaurant.
Access and Facilities
About a 15-minute walk from JR Kurashiki Station. The guest parking lot was discontinued in July 2025, and guests now use the nearby municipal parking. The ryokan provides a 1,000 yen parking voucher per room per day, with anything above that at your own expense. Guests of the separate whole-house rentals, RYOKAN KURASHIKI + Residence, can use a dedicated parking lot. Inside the ryokan there is a guests-only lounge, Terrace, where coffee, tea, matcha and sweets are offered free of charge, along with a small library.
