Noboribetsu Mahoroba is a 398-room onsen resort in Noboribetsu Onsen. Guests can enjoy four types of spring water across 31 different baths, and dinner centers on a buffet with all-you-can-eat crab and seafood rice bowls. The buffet venue has a children's corner where dishes are set out at a low height, plus a kids' space, and children's spoons and forks are provided. Bumbo seats, baby bath chairs, diaper bins and diaper-changing mats are available to borrow free of charge, and children are welcome to stay.
Rooms
The 10-tatami Japanese-style room (34 sq m, for 2-5 guests) was renovated in 2016 and has Muatsu mattresses by Showa Nishikawa, chosen for their comfortable sleep. The Western-style twin room (24 sq m, for 2 guests) has Simmons beds, while the Japanese-style twin room (24 sq m, for 2 guests) has two low beds set on tatami. One Japanese-Western room type (68 sq m, for 2-6 guests) connects a Japanese-style tatami room and a Western-style twin room by an interior door, so guests can move between them without stepping into the hallway. Another Japanese-Western room type (48 sq m, for 2-4 guests) combines an 8-tatami Japanese-style room with a Western-style twin room. The large room (48 sq m, 12 tatami plus 8.5 tatami, for 4-9 guests) is a spacious Japanese-style room for families and groups, sleeping up to 9. The suite with an open-air bath fed by the spring source (64 sq m, for 2-4 guests) is nonsmoking in all of its types, and its in-room open-air bath is 100% source spring water flowing directly from the source, with water added.
Dining
Dinner centers on the buffet at the restaurant Liberty, where more than 50 items include all-you-can-eat crab, seafood rice bowls you build with salmon roe, salmon and tuna, and ramen and tempura from the open kitchen. The dishes at the buffet venue are the same ones served to adults. On the kaiseki plans at the private dining venue Yu-en, elementary school children are served a kids' set meal on a zen tray and children who have not yet started elementary school are served a kids' plate; both are available only when you book a plan that includes meals. Children's spoons and forks are provided as well. The Green Terrace venue on the 2nd floor has a newly added children's corner, where dishes are portioned into small bowls and set out at a low height, along with a kids' space where children can play where adults can keep an eye on them.
Baths and Onsen
There are four types of spring water here: sulfur spring water, saline spring water, simple sulfur spring water and acidic iron spring water. Two communal baths and two open-air baths on basement floors 1 and 2 make up 31 different baths to work your way through, with the men's and women's baths swapping at set times. Bathing is unavailable from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. for cleaning and from 3 a.m. to 4 a.m. for the swap between the men's and women's baths. There is no private-hire bath. The in-room bath in the suite with an open-air bath fed by the spring source is 100% source spring water flowing directly from the source, with water added.
Family-Friendly Features
Children are welcome to stay. Up to 2 children may co-sleep, and elementary school children of any grade are charged 70% of the adult rate. For babies and young children, the rate is 50% of the adult rate with meals and bedding included, and no charge if neither is included; meals only or bedding only cannot be selected. For children ages 3 and over but not yet in elementary school, staying without meals or futon bedding costs an admission fee of 2,000 yen before tax, while children ages 2 and under stay free of charge. Bumbo seats, baby bath chairs, diaper bins and diaper-changing mats are available to borrow free of charge, and must be requested when booking. Diaper-changing tables are provided in 3 places in the building: the communal bath changing rooms on basement floors 1 and 2, and the women's restroom on the 3rd floor. Access
The address is 65 Noboribetsu Onsen-cho, Noboribetsu, Hokkaido. From JR Noboribetsu Station it is about 20 minutes by taxi, or about 15 minutes on the Donan Bus followed by about a 3-minute walk. From Sapporo, the Mahoroba-go shuttle bus (1,000 yen one way, 2,000 yen round trip) runs by reservation only, with reservations required at least 7 days in advance, and it may be suspended when there are 9 or fewer reservations. The fare is the same for adults and children, and children ages 0-2 pay the same fare as adults if they use a seat. Parking for 200 vehicles is free and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
