Yamaguchi Yudaonsen Kokian is a Japanese-modern inn in Yudaonsen, Yamaguchi, a 10-minute walk from Yudaonsen Station. All 16 rooms have a semi-open-air bath fed by onsen water flowing straight from the source, along with a terrace, so families can bathe on their own even though there is no private-hire bath. The water is an alkaline simple onsen, said to be beneficial for conditions such as neuralgia and sensitivity to cold. Children are welcome to stay, and there is no accommodation charge for co-sleeping children who have not yet started elementary school, though a facility fee applies from age 3. Private dining rooms are available at dinner, but their number is limited.
Rooms
All 16 rooms are Japanese-Western rooms with a semi-open-air bath fed by onsen water flowing straight from the source, plus a terrace. Both the rooms and the terraces are non-smoking. There are 16 rooms in total, sleeping 2 to 4 guests. In the 55 sq m and 57 sq m types there is no partition between the bedroom and the living area, while the 52 sq m type does have one. The 57 sq m type also has a rain shower; the open-air bath and the shower room are in separate places. The detached special room (69 sq m) comes with its own heated pool, 7 meters wide, 2.7 meters long and 1.3 meters deep, kept at around 30°C, though the temperature varies with the weather. Because the pool is deep, a guardian must stay with young children. The beds are made by Simmons, and some rooms have two beds measuring 120 cm wide by 200 cm long. A humidifier is also available to borrow.
Dining
Dinner is served at Sakura no Ka from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., a seasonal Japanese kaiseki course. Breakfast is Japanese-style, served from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., and dishes for children are prepared as well. There are 5 private rooms for up to 4 guests and 1 special room for up to 10, but they are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis and cannot be provided for every guest. In-room dining is not available. The kitchen can also discuss allergies, ingredients you would rather avoid, smaller portions and bite-sized cuts. From early October until around the end of March, dishes made with wild tiger pufferfish can be chosen as well.

The water is an alkaline simple onsen, said to be beneficial for neuralgia, muscle pain and sensitivity to cold. There are 2 communal baths, open from 5 a.m. to midnight. Day-use bathing is not available. There is no private-hire bath, but because every room has a semi-open-air bath fed straight from the source, families can bathe on their own. A little water is added to the in-room open-air baths to adjust the temperature.
Family-Friendly Features
Kokian is not an inn limited to adults, and children are welcome. Children of elementary school age and older receive the same meals and bedding as adults and are charged 100% of the adult rate. For children who have not yet started elementary school and are co-sleeping, there is no accommodation charge, but from age 3 a facility fee of 3,000 yen before tax applies. Dinner, breakfast or bedding can be added for an additional charge. Up to 2 children may co-sleep per room. Babies and toddlers are accepted free of charge only for co-sleeping with no meals and no bedding; they cannot be booked with meals or bedding included.
Access
The inn is a 10-minute walk from Yudaonsen Station on the JR Yamaguchi Line. If you are traveling by Shinkansen, get off at Shin-Yamaguchi Station; Yudaonsen Station is about 18 minutes away on the JR Yamaguchi Line. The inn does not run a shuttle between Shin-Yamaguchi Station and the property. By car, it is about 30 minutes from Hofu-Higashi IC, about 20 minutes from Yamaguchi IC and about 15 minutes from Ogori IC. Parking is free for staying guests, with 12 spaces, and cars may be parked from 2 p.m. until 11 a.m. the next morning. A free shuttle to and from Yudaonsen Station is also offered, with pickups from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and drop-offs between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.
