Hakkoda Hotel is one of the largest wooden log hotels in Japan, surrounded by primeval beech forest at an elevation of about 900 m within Towada-Hachimantai National Park in Aomori. For dinner you can choose between a full-course French meal and a Japanese kaiseki meal, and the hotel has a communal onsen bath fed by its own spring source and scented with Aomori hiba wood. Elementary school children can co-sleep, and rates for babies and toddlers are set according to whether meals and bedding are included. A free shuttle bus runs from Shin-Aomori Station, but there are no indoor or outdoor pools and no childcare service.
Rooms
The hotel has 45 rooms in 4 types, and every room looks out on primeval beech forest from its windows. The non-smoking Twin Room 【30 sq m】 sleeps 1 to 3 guests, with two beds measuring 120 cm wide by 210 cm long and one bed measuring 120 cm wide by 195 cm long. When 3 guests stay, an extra bed is used. The non-smoking Maisonette 【44 sq m】 is a twin room with a loft and a view of Hakkoda-Odake, the main peak of the Hakkoda range, and sleeps up to 3 guests. The sofa in the living area converts into a bed, which makes it easy for three to share. There is also a non-smoking Special Room (Japanese-Western room).

This Japanese-Western room sleeps up to 4 guests. The Japanese-style area has tatami flooring, and the bedding is futon. It is suited to couples and families. The Special Room (Western-style suite) is a non-smoking room for up to 3 guests. Rooms have a humidifier, a toilet with a washing function, and a bathroom with a separate washing area.
Dining
For dinner, you can choose between a full-course French meal at the restaurant MeDeau and a Japanese kaiseki meal at the Japanese restaurant Kanmizu. Because the Japanese and Western dinners are served in separate venues, everyone in a group needs to choose the same dinner. At breakfast, each guest can choose Japanese or Western, and different menus can be ordered at the same table. Food allergies must be reported in advance. The hotel cannot accommodate allergies to seafood in general, dashi stock, wheat flour, dairy products and the like, nor vegan or vegetarian requests. MeDeau has a smart-casual dress code: casual wear such as sweatsuits, shorts and sandals is not permitted, and neither are yukata, so please pay attention to your children's clothing as well. At Kanmizu, you can dine in your yukata.
Baths and Onsen
The communal onsen bath, scented with Aomori hiba wood, is separated for men and women, and its large windows look out on the beech forest. The water flows straight from the hotel's own spring source; strongly acidic at pH 1.2, it is said to be colorless and clear. A dry sauna adjoins the communal bath, and the cold plunge bath uses Hakkoda subterranean water. After bathing, natural water for rehydration and bite-sized ice cream are available free of charge. There is no private-hire bath. Staying guests receive a free bathing ticket for the sister property, Sukayu Onsen, and can use the scheduled shuttle there by asking at the front desk. Sukayu Onsen's communal bath, Hiba Sennin-buro (the "thousand-person hiba bath"), is mixed-gender.

Families with children are welcome, and elementary school children can co-sleep (up to 2 children). Children's rates are 16,500 yen for upper-grade elementary school children and 13,200 yen for lower-grade elementary school children. For babies and toddlers, the rate is 13,200 yen with meals and bedding, 6,050 yen with bedding but no meals, and 7,150 yen with meals but no bedding; with neither meals nor bedding, there is no charge. The number of meals served to children follows the meal conditions of the plan you book. There are no indoor or outdoor pools and no childcare service. The Special Room (Japanese-Western room) uses futon bedding, so it is easy to sleep side by side with a small child. Because the dinner venue MeDeau has a dress code, please pay attention to your children's clothing there.
Access
The hotel sits at an elevation of about 900 m within Towada-Hachimantai National Park. It is about 40 minutes by car from Aomori Airport, about 60 minutes by car from JR Aomori Station, and about 45 minutes from the Aomori-Chuo Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway. A free shuttle bus runs from Shin-Aomori Station, departing at 10:15 a.m. and 2 p.m., with reservations required by the day before. Parking for 50 cars is free of charge. There are winter road closures, and a four-wheel-drive vehicle fitted with studless winter tires is recommended for the journey. Late checkout is available until 11 a.m.
